Default "The Future of Notebooks:" New MacBook Air

As expected, Apple updated the MacBook Air line today, offering two different sizes and featuring new slim unibody enclosures, improved battery life, and solid state drives on both. The larger MacBook Air has the same 13.3 inch screen size as the previous model, but provides 1440 x 900 native resolution. It comes with Core 2 Duo processor clocked at 1.86 GHz with a 128GB SSD card for $1299 and with a 256GB SSD for $1599. The smaller Air has an 11.6-inch backlit LCD at 1366 x 768 and a Core 2 Duo at 1.4 GHz, with a 64GB SSD at $999 and a 128GB SSD at $1199.

Steve Jobs, introducing the new MacBook Air, joked that it answered the question "what would happen if a MacBook and an iPad hooked up?" Calling it "the future of notebooks," he touted the new MacBook Air's flash drive for its reliability and its instant-on capability. The new unibody case is a departure from previous Airs and from the main MacBook line. The design is more sharply angular, and even thinner than the previous MacBook Air, with the 13-inch model at just 0.68 inch at its thickest point, tapering to a knifelike 0.11 inch. Due to the absence of hard drive and optical drive, the 13-inch model weighs 90% less than the previous model. The keyboard case itself is only slightly thicker than the USB port. The port door that was a hallmark of the MacBook Air is gone, with two USB ports, one on each side, an SD card reader and mini displayPort on the case sides like a standard MacBook. Both MacBook Airs have expanded batteries offering 5 hours (for the 11-inch) and 7 hours (for the 13-inch) of wireless web browsing; both models claim thirty days of standby time on a full charge.

The new MacBook Air is available today, but the Apple Online Store is having some problems as of this writing and you can configure and buy yours on the Apple Online Store.

    YES 11" macbok air!!!!!!

I was about to get an iPad but now I'm going to get the 11" MacBook air. It's an iPad with a keyboard and a giant multi gesture track pad with higher resolution and actually plays vlc correctly. Phew. I almost bought an iPad yesterday and a 64gig macbook air with student discount is roughly the same price. OS Lion with Mac app store is going to rock!

I just called my local store and they don't have them available yet. He said he knew as much as I did and that their shipment wasn't in yet for the day. There is a 50$ off for students. I think I'm going to wait for the free iPod/MacBook deal in spring they do every year. Sell the iPod like I normally do, get the 50 off for the student price and make my MacBook air 750$ plus tax. Add another year of warranty and call it good. I don't want it until macappstore is available anyways.

Oh boy, the little 11 incher might be my first Mac Computer.
I already had just about every iPod, and I've had every iPhone.
I been waiting for a small computer like the 11 inch.

    1) come on, Steve! Put all the ports on one side so we can get one free of cables!!! And it make making a dock a helluva lot easier!

    2) 0.11"? Give it a titanium carbide coating option and not only is it lightweight and powerful, but you can field dress a fresh kill with it.

Tech specs for MBP say "Full-size backlit keyboard" while those for both Air's say only "Full-size keyboard" so unless it's a typo... then there is no back light.

yeah, that's what I was going off of. No mention of it on the specs page or the "ohhh!! Look, it's shinny" page.

if they put all the ports on one side, It would not be able to gradually get slimmer.

looks great. I think i'll get one for the wife now. But might have to get a mbp b/c of the backlit keyboard. And the 11 inch doesn't have an SD card slot either.

Apple - MacBook Air - Technical specifications of the 11-inch.

Either way I'm getting a MacBook pro for Christmas or black Friday.

The air models look accident prone

Jailbreak your MacBook Air sounds good to me but what about DVD drive I read some ware that a new MacBook Air cd/DVD was coming out and can I use all my other apps like on the iPad. Besides that can't wait to get my hands on the 128GB MBA and everyone thought it was going to be a smaller iPad WRONG.
