Default China Unicom Gets iPhone 4, iPad

According to a brief report in the English-language Chinese media, Apple has settled with China Unicom on a deal to sell the iPhone 4 and iPad in China, less than a year since the iPhone 3GS became available and just a few days since a WiFi-enabled phone went on sale. The report indicated that China Unicom would be launching the new phone in early September, but didn't give a timetable for the iPad launch.

Official iPhones are an expensive prestige item in China, with the new government-approved WiFi iPhone 3GS going for a whopping 4,999 yuan or $736 US at current rates. China Unicom offers some subsidies for customers that choose contracts, though these are are generally not popular in China. The government-owned carrier also recently decided to lower the price of the 32GB iPhone 3GS by 1,000 yuan in order to clear out inventory ahead of the expected iPhone 4 launch.

The bad publicity surrounding the iPhone 4 antenna issue may have hit the "gray market' of unofficial phones brought in from overseas and Hong Kong. Bloomberg quoted China Daily as saying that the price of gray iPhones dropped to 6,000 yuan from 20,000 yuan in the month of July. However, follow-up reports in the Western media questioned whether the 20,000-yuan figure was for all iPhones, or just unlocked ones from the UK. Locked phones from the US and Hong Kong sell for less.

That's too expensive for an iPhone. At least, the Chinese can enjoy the iPad @ an reasonable price.

ah, canooks always want to bash america, we do have freedom of choice and the best healthcare in the world because it isn't run by the gov't. you guys speak rubbish, it also isn't illegal to be communist maybe in the fifties, wheres waldo, that was just a dumb response. but we aren't here to bash America. We are here to talk about this article, and I'm glad to live where the iPhone isn't $700 something. Even though that's pretty price, it is practically what we pay in america if you don't want to sign a contract with AT&T, otherwise you get a 32 gig iPhone for $300. Who knows if Verizon will lower the price of the iPhone with the signing of a contract. also, Verizon has very slow 3g service. And i don't want that. I want the fastest 3g experience in the market. So what if when I work in the boons i don't get 3g, I do in the denser of populations. Like good ol' Atlanta, not a frozen wasteland like Canada.

There are communist parties still in America, they just don't use that word anymore. So where as that law may be still in effect, it isn't enforced, and Canada has a different currency system. Plus you guys pay so much taxes to be taken care of by the gov't, the gov't is probly the one giving you a break, not apple.

    Sad really.
That is, of course, a sweeping generalisation worthy of an American....
We don't care about what the rest of the world thinks, that's why we left England, that's why we be beat the hell out of the English (a real strong military at the time) with a little help from the french, We're all about independence, freedom of speech. And dude you can't spell work a sh*t. Just remember the freedom of speech part. Cause all i'm doing on here is backing up my country. We don't give two sh*ts about what the rest of the world thinks, but they sure do like our products that get created here in America, like hmmm.... you guys don't like iPhones do you? did a canook make it? No, an American company did. It's called the invisible hand, not what socialist countries have.
