This makes no sense at all. Remember when we all had those phones with retractable antenas? You could hold onto that all day and not get a dropped bar. And plus the antenas on the iPhone 4 go around the sides so you would have to be covering each antena 360 degrees. Also wouldn't you think that the reception would go through your hand or finger? And about this being not healthy: many people have their cellphones near their wastes twenty four seven. No science has proved anything to be dangerous about cellphones. Radiation exposure can result in some cancers but the radiation that ALL cellphones emit is nothing to worry about. It's too small to harm you.

This is terrible. My phone does it everytime. But I've noticed it's only when you touch all 3 sections of the band.

Really ***. I'm starting to miss my 3Gs...

This is strange indeed. I've only activated mine through iTunes to get the OS up and running so I still have to go to AT&T.com to activate it before I can try this out.

Isn't the sections of the band actually 3 different antennas? Thought I read that somewhere.

Like wifi 1 section and gsm another, then udma on another.

Crossing them over to each other by the hand destroys the signal.

Ok, I know a lot of us here are geeks ... but I don't want a f'n cheap-***** rubber band around my $300 phone so it will do what it was SUPPOSED to do (ummmmmmmm ... make calls).

Also gotta chime in with the other guys on the "A CASE IS NOT A FIX" thing ... this is simply NOT acceptable !!! And anyone who thinks it is, deserves any POS they buy.

I have all 3 previous iPhones ... and NONE of them do this ... no matter how I hold them ... not even a single bar ... and not after close to 2 minutes on each !!!

Now does anyone have some tape so I can fix the bridge on my glasses ? ... thanx ... lol

Most definitely should have caught this one. Some poor soul is going to be lynched over this at Apple. This is straight up a hardware problem.

External antenna idea not looking so bright...

So let me get this straight. You lost a max of two bars? Im sorry but thats not really comparable. We are talking about a total loss of signal here on the iphone 4 no? Do you have a iphone 4? If so how much signal do you lose?

I believe everyines iPhone 4 drops down to no bars or atleast 1 and lose 3G it's hard for me to really check because where I live I always have messed up signal it usually gies to full bars with 3G to no bars with edge and this is on my 3GS 3.1.3. My iPhone 4 does it once I. Awhile but honestly not as bad as the 3GS and I had 2 3GS both the same.

Dude, I have a cell tower literally a "stones throw away" from my house and I can destroy every single signal bar by holding it snugly...

No. Usually I lose 4 bars. I'll go from 5 to 1. If this problem exists on the 3GS as well as iPhone 4, something is really fd up.

Just tested it again, was laying on desk 5 bars 3G. picked it up and the bars slowly ticked away until I was on 1 bar. Set it back down and I instantly had 5 bars again.

hmmm. so on your iphone 4 have you tried turning off your wifi and blutooth like others have suggested and does this fix the problem?
