Default Microsoft Introduces Windows Live Messenger for the iPhone

Better late than never, Microsoft has introduced its hugely popular chat client, Windows Live Messenger, to the iPhone. Even better, it comes as a free app available now for download from the App Store. On Monday, Microsoft rolled out the 7.2MB download, which essentially enables iPhone users to contact friends and family via instant message on both Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.

According Microsoft, some of the coolest attributes about the new app include: the ability to chat and IM your contacts on the go; receive IM notifications even when your app is closed to avoid missing messages; view updates that your contacts share via social networks like Facebook; upload pics directly from the iPhone (and make albums, add captions, receive comments, etc.); and access your hotmail email (and compose messages) without leaving the app.

The app, which is fully compatible with iOS 4, is already being called one of (if not the most) advanced versions of the chat client ever put forward by Microsoft on any mobile platform. This is also only the fourth application developed so far by Microsoft for the iPhone. Unfortunately, so far Windows Live Messenger isn't yet available to all who want it. Like the iPhone's Bing app, some European countries - like Belgium - do not yet have the option of downloading this new app from Microsoft, which stands poised to become a hugely popular offering in the App Store.

i installed it earlier today, works rather nice for a Microsoft product. I liked how you can scroll through the photos! Apparently the application keeps you logged in to the service, and you receive push notifications when someone sends you a message. I guess it will multitask (we will find out later today ).

Why would I want to replace a multi-service app with this?

Hey... Google STILL doesn't have a GTalk client out for iPhone. I wouldn't rip on MS too bad...

If it actually offers push notification for a few days it already works 10 times better than any other free IM app out there as I have yet to find one good free IM app that works with Live service and offers good push notification.

Many people (Such as me) only really need one service so the multi-protocol is kinda useless.

Having said that, iOS 4 may render the first argument moot...

I use MS Messenger extensively, but this isn't giving me anything I don't already have with Beejive and Meebo.

The only thing I can think of that this will be able to do is multi-location login unlike beejive (which will sign you off from wherever else you're logged in and vice-versa)

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.
