Default Competitors, Experts Weigh in on Retina Display

Apple announced the Retina Display on the new iPhone 4 with much fanfare, calling it "the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever." The bold claims have led to pushback, with a competing manufacturer saying that the Retina Display is a battery hog and can't touch OLED displays. An analyst, meanwhile, contradicted Steve Jobs's claim that the human eye can't detect individual picture elements at a density below 300 pixels per inch.

Steve Jobs bragged that the new iPhone's LCD screen, reportedly made by LG Innotek, outperforms active-matrix organic LED (AMOLED) displays such as those on the Samsung Galaxy S. Samsung hit back against Jobs's claim that the Retina Display has “much more accurate color, and much higher resolution," with a spokesperson telling the Korea Herald newspaper that their AMOLED screens beat the Retina Displays contrast ratio, color reproduction, and response time. “Structurally," the spokesman said "IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology." The Samsung spokesman claimed that the "visible" difference between the 960x640 Retina Display and Samsung's 800x480 Super AMOLED was only "3 to 5 percent," but that the added resolution cut battery life by 30%.

The claim that the human eye can only discern jagged edges at a density above 300 pixels per inch was disputed by an expert. In an email sent out to numerous media outlets, including Gizmodo and PC World, Dr. Raymond Soneira asserted that the retina can identify individual points at an angular measurement of 50 cycles per degree, or 0.6 arcseconds. He translated this to explain that "if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes that works out to 477 pixels per inch. At 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi." Nevertheless, Dr. Soneira said, the Retina Display is "most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can't wait to test it)." However, he added, this is another example of spec exaggeration."

Other experts noted that, while people with perfect, 20/20 vision might be able to see pixels from a foot away, for most of us the display will look smooth. So there's a little wiggle room left for Steve Jobs, and his general drift is still solid: this is a wicked sharp screen.

I don't see why everyone is viewing this as "hate". So if a person gives misinformation and they are corrected by another party that means that party is now "hating"? Give me a break people...

Will putting a screen protector on make much difference in the display?
I've also read that the new glass is pretty scratch resistant, does it even make sense to still put a protector on it?

But we are talking about Steve Jobs spreading disinformation. He is allowed to lead all the sheep right up to the cliff's edge.

It will not make that much difference if it is a clear screen protector. You will want to stay away from the mirror ones and the matte finish ones. I have always used the matte finish because I hate finger prints, but that is about to change with the 4th gen.

Well if we are all going to hate on Samsung then the correct phrase would be "don't hate!" LOL...

Uhm the glass has always been "scratch resistant." On my 2G phone (before I trashed it) I had to take a sharp screw and dig, dig and dig before I could get it to scratch the screen. This is nothing new. There is no need to put any kind of screen protector on the screens, you are just adding junk to the phone that is not needed, not to mention putting cash in those accessory companies pockets like Zagg...those screen protectors are total junk, are a pain to put on not to mention having water all over your display, inside the button, headphone jack, etc...it's absolute garbage and you all are making these rip off companies richer by the day. Zagg is the biggest, pimped out company out of them all, it's nothing but over rated junk where you think you need it. You don't need it!

Glass gets scracthed very much, maybe it won't get deep scratches like the one u can do with a screw, but if you hold it a the right angle, u can see tons of hair line scratches all over from normal daily use.

You must be putting your phone in a blender then. I have no marks on my screen at all. If it takes such force to put a scratch on the phone with a screw, it makes no sense how you have hair line scratches (which would take less force to do.) Just running a screw over the screen back and fourth doesn't do anything so not sure what you are doing to your phone lol.

The chances of getting 20/10 vision are slim to none, no surgeon in the world can guarantee that... if they are then check to see if they have been struck off as they're a quack, the technology doesn't exist yet and even if it did its all about the healing process, thats what determines what you see for the next 30 years
Take it from some one who had it 3 years ago and walked away with the best possible out come 20/20

Now back to the eyePhone (sorry couldn't resist) role on Tuesday and then fast forward to Thursday... i'm fed up on waiting i want the thing NOW
