Holy crap...my balls were up in my throat....i did a restore and didnt do a back up and set up the phone as new. The internet is now working.

You just synch everything back - just don't restore from a backup.
You lose texts, settings and camera roll (copy it off first) everything else should be synched to iTunes apart from cydia apps.

yep...I lost everything but the phone is fully functional now and is running on the iOS4.
