And I'm not a fan boy so don't bother. I actually own a droid and writing apps for android is a mess.
I think the point he was trying to make was that writing apps for the iphone existed long before the appstore was invented. If your scenario comes to play, the only apps we won't likely see are apps made by large companies. The private sector will still make apps regardless of the situation. Plenty of great Apps were free and now cost money simply because they CAN. I am NOT backing piracy, but piracy should be written into the business model as losses much like theft of physical merchandise is written into business models of department stores. It is a fact of life, and frankly there are far worse things that happen on a day to day basis on this earth to be worried about the people who own certain things only because piracy exists and if it didn't they wouldn't buy those things in the first place.

I agree, some apps you have to pay for in Cydia are straight garbage.

Excuse me. You did take some pretty pix of a Mac conference that we financed. Yeah this was two years ago, but I don't forget screwjobs.

30% is standard operating procedure in software circles. When you factor in VAT taxes (which it's doubtful that Rock et al. pays), server costs (saurik pays a lot per month so the world over can have good access to his software), and PayPal fees, saurik doesn't earn anywhere close to 30%. I'm also unsure as to where you get the exclusivity info from; as far as I know, saurik hasn't cut any such deals.

Rock et al. is most definitely in it for the money. While it may not be as apparent now, Rock was built with one sole purpose: to sell software. The ability to use distributed sources (e.g. repos), etc. was added as a second thought. On the other hand, Cydia was designed with repositories in mind, and the store was added as an afterthought.

As for Appsidy, imagine if Lowe's and Home Depot were in the same shopping mall, and suddenly Lowe's installed shopping lanes inside of Home Depot. That is what Appsidy was doing to Cydia.

AppSidy had a portal with a couple forms and I was good to go. In contrast: I've spent days e-mailing people and googling variants on "join Cydia store" with no luck. I'm sure I'm being stupid. I MUST be missing something obvious; there's no rational way a sales system should be as difficult to join as Cydia seems to be. Try as I may, though, I can't find the "join" link, I get no replies from Saurik... so I'll miss the AppSidy team, they were professional and courteous and always responded fast to their e-mail.

(Nothing ill meant towards Saurik of course; the man does good work, he keeps well busy, he must not have a support team on staff to help...)

This is it. I googled many days, wrote many mails to saurik, never got a answer. There is absolutly ZERO information about how to release anything at Cydia Store, no answer, no help, nothing....

I was really pissed off and decide to sell my themes with appsidy.

But: Appsidy was the same ****, like Rockapp, with every release they produced bugs and frustration to me and the users, mixed names, lost user tickets, it was (is) still the pure hell to release anything at rockapp and/or appsidy.

From a developers side i can only warn you from anything that has to do with Rock ! The shutdown of appsidy is a case in point

Now i still have problems as my themes moved over to Cydia store: minimum pro is still missing and users canīt update for example "Evolution OS2".

I pray that this developers nightmare will end some day.......

I never said I had an issue with the 30%. I think its a fair amount. I also never said saurik was taking home 30%. Any business person would realize that gross income and net income are very different things.

I never really understand why you have such an issue with competition. I respect your right to not sell your software on rock but devs like yourself that choose to hold out on rock sales are missing out on potential sales. As a business person, I don't see the point. But good for you for standing by your principles.

And as far as Rock is concerned, yes they are in it for money. Just like you as a dev are in it for money, and saurik is in it for money. saurik has been a huge part of the community and whatever money he is profiting from cydia sales, I am sure is not enough. I think saurik should take a small cut on repo ad revenue also.
