Download this: The Firmware Umbrella
And then open it and connect your iDevice. After a second or two it should recognize your device near the upper left corner.
Above that, there's a button that says "Save My SHSH". Click that and wait for it to finish.
Then you can open up "Display SHSH" (upper right) to make sure it saved correctly.
If you're not on ios 4, then go to advanced settings and set it to your device - 4.0

Do you need the orginal sim card to do the jailbreak on the 3gs. I have it but i got my t- mobile sim card in now and what do you do frist jailbreak or unlock or will it be done the same time with one process.Or will buying one of those phone book cards unlock and jailbreak at the same time thanks for info.

Right now, I believe so. The 4.x is being worked on right now, but it will probably make your phone very slow and laggy.
