Opera Mini In the Hands of App Store Approval Process

It appears that Opera have finally finished up their final touches on their long-awaited Internet browser for iPhone, as they have revealed that it has finally been submitted to the App Store. They even have posted a counter displaying EXACTLY how much time has passed since it was submitted for approval (Apple had better take heed of this unless they want some bad publicity for the App Store). Opera claims their browser to be up to six times faster than the built-in Safari.
There have been other "alternative" browsers released on the iPhone; however, they are all based on "webkit," the web-rendering engine used by Safari. They aren't in themselves new browsers; the are only front-ends to Safari's solution to display the web. Of course, they may also get denied for "duplicating functionality," as many apps already have, including GV Mobile, which has since ended up on Cydia.

for any browser to be better than safari, it needs two things
one is that even if u kill the process of it, the next time u go on it, it takes u to the last web page and another is that it remembers the webaddress u have been to.
hope this does it
opera is awesemo though

Opera mini is an amazing browser. It is the only thing I would use in my blackberry days. Sadly, it will get denied on the basis that the iphone "already has a fully functional browser."

Does anyone think Apple will approve Opera’s browser app in light that it directly competes with Safari on the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad?
sziklassy, looks like we are thinking the same thing.Last edited by reddawg; 03-23-2010 at 03:27 PM.

With the EU up Microsoft's *** lately about the whole "browser choice" thing? ABSOLUTELY. I can tell you right now that if it doesn't get through approval, it will make a CNN article. Opera is just too big of a deal.
By the way, reading the original article I noticed that it says that Opera's servers act as sort of a "proxy catalyst," as they download the webpage to their servers first, compress the data, then send it to your iPhone. Does anyone know if desktop versions of Opera do this, too?

I am not sure this currently applies much to phone OS's. if it did, we wouldn't have the AppStore restricting what can and cannot be installed on our devices. Not saying this shouldn't be challenged, but the current state of the appstore is BS. We shouldn't HAVE to go through an approval process to install another browser on our phones!

Eh, you know what I mean. It is definitely throwing a wrench in development. The vast majority of people don;t know whata jailbreak is and are limited to the content they are spoonfed by Apple.
FWIW I like the layout, but I am kinda used to it. Looks exactly like Safari with added features really.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

via Opera Web Browser | Faster & safer | Download the new Internet browsers free
Opera Turbo for fast browsing on slow connections
Opera Turbo uses compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections, for example, when using a crowded Wi-Fi in a cafe or a slow dial-up modem.
yes the full desktop version does compress data too

Would be great for those of us on limited data plans or T-Mobile edge! I hope apple approves it but have my doubts that they will. let the countdown begin! My Opera - Opera Mini Countup

I don't really think they 'compete' per se.
Any iDevice will come stock with Safari, it's not like you're going to the App Store and deciding that you'd rather pay for Opera than Safari, know what I mean?
If this does make it through, any ideas as to how much it might cost?

it's called "opera turbo". you should really download the opera browser, i'm using in on my macbook, and it is great.
for example. instead of having a downloads popup, it atuo creates a new tab named downloads, it does tons of neat things like that which just work better than safari or firefox
