Today Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC, the maker of the HTC phones and Nexus one. The lawsuits states thats there are 20 different patent infringements related to the iPhone OS, anchitecture, and hardware.
In the release, Steve Jobs says, "We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it...We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."
From The Business Insider,
Earlier, we supposed that Apple's multi-touch user interface could be the basis for the lawsuit. But after examining the complaint, it appears that Apple is NOT suing over multitouch, but rather a bunch of other software. (When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, he touted its multitouch screen, then said, "And boy, have we patented it.")

Companies seem to patent everything and sue everybody.
While people should have a right to patent innovative ideas I sometimes think it's more about screwing money out of people if they can.
I don't know the facts of this case so could be wrong but I'm not sure this will benefit anyone. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

I can't see how a patent would benefit anyone but the patent holder.
You see it all the time with drug
companies. As soon as their patent is about to expire they release the CR or XR version of the drug that is supposed to be new and improved, while in reality it is just a blatant patent extenders and attempt to take sales back from generics.

This is a joke, Appl£: We can and will infringe patents of other companies (nokia) but we'll get really upset if anyone infringes our patents.
Appl£ is getting so feckin irritating!!!

I like my Nexus One, I can see some iPhone similarities with the multi-touch and a couple other things but I've seen those on a lot of other smartphones as well. I do think its cool when companies make their own software and technology, I know the iPhone has been the basis for all other smartphones, but companies do have the ability to come up with their own stuff.

They should protect their investments and that is exactly what this is about:money involved in bringing new ideas to products. It is not cheaply done.

Sueing is the number one get rich-quick scheme in America and if you look at it from an Apple (or any company) point of view, in one hand you can sue right away for a patent violation and make a quick buck from court fees, or in the other hand they can wait it out, let the competitor make lots of money, then sue so that they can claim all the money they already made instead of killing the patent early and hopeing the tech they used will make as much as sueing would have...it's quite smart on their part that way but getting really lame at the same time...just my two pennies!
