Default Carriers Team Up to Create Multi-Platform App Store

Twenty-four wireless carriers from around the world have united to create their own store for mobile phone apps, taking aim at Apple's wildly successful iTunes App Store as well as the Android market. The Wholesale Applications Community, announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, is an alliance of major carriers – including AT&T, Verizon, NTT DoCoMo, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile and Vodafone – plan to develop a so-called “open technology platform" within the next 12 months. The standard will be independent of phone type and operating system.

According to a statement by the founders of the alliance, they plan to create what they call "a wholesale applications ecosystem" with the goal of creating "a simple route to market for developers to deliver the latest innovative applications and services to the widest possible base of customers around the world," The first step, they say, is to "unite members’ developer communities and create a single, harmonized point of entry" for developers. Claiming a potential user base of three billion subscribers around the world, they hope to entice mobile app developers to rely less on the App Store, which carriers feel create loyalty for a particular device rather than a carrier. They hope the ease of developing for a single marketplace will be more attractive than a separate process for Apple, Google, Research In Motion and Nokia app stores.

But the plan is already drawing skepticism by industry observers. Informa Telecoms analyst Mark Newman tells 9to5Mac that the competition between carriers could hinder progress towards this ambitious goal, and wonders "whether such a large group of mobile operators will be able to achieve the level of cooperation and integration required to make this initiative a success,” Also, Newman said, developers "have historically distrusted operators because of the unfavorable revenue share deals that have been on the table.” Senior analyst Guillermo Escofot also wonders if carriers will have "the brand "coolness" necessary" to attract top developers.

its going to be difficult to create apps that will work cross platform. One version of the store will end up dominating the others.

For example lets say the Palm Pre version of the store brings in more money than the Motorola Razor version. Dev's will stop wastng their time porting apps to the Razor and only make them for big sellers like the Pre. --completely hypothetical

    It won't work.

it will be successful. It has been coming for awhile. Certain apps will be filtered for function and phone so that apple will not have to break it's terms, and there will be specialized apps that will take advantage of hardware on some phones but not all. I am glad this is happening it means more dev's and it will make apples hold a little looser.
I think the Mobile World Congress is going to be a very powerful player in the world as everything is going/gone mobile and they seem to have the ability to unite carriers. Anything that can put ATT and Verizon in the same room and have them agree on something must carry some serious power.

    Good news article btw

Yeah, you'll be the coolest person in the room when you pull one out and show it around, but that gets old fast when three other people have them and one person somehow has one that glows in the dark.

It will NOT be a failure! Because it'll never get off the ground to have a chance to fail.

If you only care about the app store this doesn't matter, because it wont come close to touching the wild successes of the app store and apple isn't going to conform to something like this. The only thing that this somewhat effects is the android market, It will be interesting to see the reaction.

Dev's everywhere had the openness of this type of thing for years with Java, but it's still going to be an issue of different code for different hardware, some features being supported by some handsets and not others.

Whats needed is one main kernel that can be freely allowed to access and execute software that can operate on any handset.

The frontend of the OS would then be down to the handset creator for design etc. This would allow a singular platform where an app can run without having many versions for different OS's making the app dev's job a whole lot easier.

One OS for phones but many platforms for the compilers.
