What I think will be funny is if Verizon gets the Iphone before AT&T roll out their Microcell. All the AT&T customers who have the Iphone and don't get AT&T service at their home/business, but get service at those places with Verizon leave and go to Verizon.
And/or all the people wanting an Iphone, but waiting on AT&T to roll out the Microcell just go to Verizon.
I see AT&T losing A LOT of business if that happens.

well the thing i'm concerned about is the fact that verizon does not use sim cards. if they do make the change then wouldn't they have to manufacture a new phone without the sim tray?

I would love to see tons of iPhone users jump the ATT ship and go to Verizon and then bog the ***** out of their network. I mean, Verizon doesn't even have voice/data streaming at the same time on their network. Then the everybody will sink at Verizon and all the loyal ATT people that stayed with ATT will laugh and laugh and laugh.

Not a chance. They are still airing anti-Verizon ads on TV. I just saw one during 24, which is primetime, and those ads cost more than any if you make in a year. There is no way they are continuing with those ads and going to announce a Verizon partnership less than two days later.

I doubt this will pan it. Yesterday Apple themselves came out and said they're happy with AT&T, understand the network shortcomings when it comes to data and that they have met and seen the plans AT&T has to fix it and like what they saw.
I don't think there's any reason they need to switch considering they're making more money than Avatar at this point probably.
EDIT: The actual quote, during a phone interview
AT&T's getting a lot of bad press here, why stick with a single carrier? Tim: AT&T is a great partner, it's important to remember that they have more mobile broadband usage than any other carrier in the world. In the vast majority of places, iPhone customers are getting a great experience. AT&T has acknowledged problems, we've personally reviewed their plans to fix it and we're confident it'll be handled.

I will check them out tomorrow morning.
And Why would Apple go to a slower (speed) data network?
ATT has the fastest 3.2 Mbit > 1.4 Mbit (Verizon).
Come on ... seriously you guys are believing the upcoming 4G iPhone would run on Verizon slow network??

I hope this happens. I had two iphones since they came out and I got kinda boored with apple. So I made the huge mistake of selling my 3g and getting a blackberry storm 2. I can tell you that the verizon service is 1000% better. Im locked to them now, and was wishing that the iphone would show up on verizon. If this happens, I will be getting one with the quickness. Fingers crossed this happens. Verizon is going to have one kickass 4G network I hear.

Forget about 4G. Test cities go up by years end. Wide (not full) deployment won't happen til 2012, and all if those is only LTE, not 4G LTE-A whic likely won't hit until 2013+ (but will likely be a cheaper network upgrade consisting primarily of software. Earliest Verizon compatible LTE iPhone = June 2012. Earliest Verizon compatible CDMA/HSPA dual phone = 2011.
