Help GeoHot Find 10 Red Balloons and He'll Make an Untethered JB
George "GeoHot" Hotz has asked for help - in a tweet yesterday - from the jailbreak community in winning the DARPA Network Challenge. If he wins, he says, he will create an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS.
The DARPA Network Challenge is a competition that explores the role the Internet and social networking play in the timely communication, wide-area team-building, and urgent mobilization required to solve broad-scope, time-critical problems.
The challenge is to be the first to submit the locations of 10 moored, 8-foot, red, weather balloons at 10 fixed locations in the continental United States. The balloons will be in readily accessible locations and visible from nearby roads.
In two separate tweets today, GeoHot made his offer:
at 9AM EST tomorrow, I will be asking for all of your help..if you come through for me, i'll make you an untethered jailbreak. also $1000.00at 9AM EST tomorrow, I need you all to trend something and do something, which will be revealed then..big rewards are in order if this works
The blackra1n exploit GeoHot had worked out the new iPod touch and the newer iPhone 3GS devices require the phone to tethered jailbreak. A complete untethered jailbreak would require a new exploit, something that would defeat Apple's efforts to outfox jailbreakers by releasing new bootrom code.
GeoHot requests people to help by finding the balloons and retweeting the #dudeitsaballoon topic on Twitter to make it a top trend.

so if i m not wrong..he lost now...so no more untethered jailbreak????? is it true?
"wait, why do people think i'm making untethered?...to clarify, I wanted to win the balloon competition...if win then untethered else no"

I was watching this yesterday. There are a lot of pi**ed of people that assumed he would make/distribute the untethered J/B win or lose. The bashing is happening on twitter.
However he stated that only if he won would the J/B be completed.
Lots of frustration out there over this...Geo should have made it more clear in his request, so there would be absolutely no question.
A lot of people tried to help him win...unfortunate that Geo could not throw a little something out.
IMHO, Geo is not after money, I think what he wants is fame on a national level...but that is my opinion, I don't know the man.

Looks like the little brat has just tweeted his way into irrelevancy. He's said that since he didn't win he won't be releasing an untethered jailbreak until next year's competition if he wins then. I think by then dev-team will have something going. If his whole aim is to get more fame, he's just doing the opposite with his actions. When an untethered jailbreak comes out from some other source, no one will care about him and his poor balloons anymore.

People who are mad at Geohot should learn to read. He made it very clear that he would only release untethered jb if and only if he won the challenge.
"at 9AM EST tomorrow, I will be asking for all of your help..if you come through for me, i'll make you an untethered jailbreak. also $1000.00"
Sure I'm disappointed but not pissed off at him. And I'm sure those same ppl will turn into a bunch of teenyboppers if he announces a release in the future.

You know what? Pick your side and stand on it. You either think GH is the man for turning down 10k a little while ago or you think he's an *** for this Red Balloon thing. Stop waffling.
I for one pick the side that says "He's the man, always has been the man, and will be the man long after this passes".

I don't think people know just how much work would be involved in making an untethered JB. I'm not even sure George could do it, but he is pretty confident he could.
He has only recently unlocked BB 05.11.07, like he said, if he does an untethered JB what would people want next? He wanted to win this competition and was willing to put in a lot of hard work to help people if he did. He didn't so he isn't.
No matter what he does people will always want more. If more people donated for the work he has already done then maybe he would do more, on the other hand, maybe not.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe he owes anyone anything. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

I just think those haters should look at themselves and ask what the F**K have you contributed to the iphone scene? Shut the f up until you are able to produce something tangible and contribute for free.
