I guess I don't see what is wrong. They filed for these patents a long time ago, they were awarded them, and now want to enforce them. So they are ***holes because other people violated their patents? So it is okay to enforce your patent if one company violates it, but not alright if lots of people violate it? I could sue if one robber breaks into my house and steals my stuff, but if a gang does it, I have no right to?

It's not April 1st, so what's with this story? It doesn't make sense and I find it very hard to believe. You can't patent an idea. You can patent some technology saving an image but you can't patent the idea of saving an image.

if they hold patents on pretty much everything a digital camera does, how come ive never seen a camera from them?, everything else on that list ive seen before target walmart and so on, but no st. clair. this has to be the dumbest thing ive ever heard and how are they winning, and why are they getting paid so much? you would think that the judge would just look at the previous cases and say oh well you already got about 60 mill and throw it out

This is understandable if St. Clair can somehow prove that they were the originators of the idea AND got the patent drawn up before anyone else did.

WOW! This article and the majority of comments under this thread are extremely ignorant of the patent system. As evidenced by the large awards that were granted to the patent holder, these patents were held valid, and as such, the infringers must pay damages under the law. Since the first of these patents issued in 1992--long before the digital camera boom--it appears as though the inventors on these patents were pioneering the digital camera industry. Why did employers hire these inventors and seek to develop this type of technology? Because money was invested in exchange for the prospect of acquiring exclusive patent rights on new, popular technology. And guess what--it worked! Right now, the patent holder is reaping its reward, and you are enjoying the fruits of its research and development--digital camera technology. You know what that is called, boys and girls? Capitalism. Incentive drives innovation.

The complaint indicates that the patent holder has licensed these patents to other companies after such companies lost their patent infringement lawsuits. It is likely that Apple will do the same. The patent holder does not want to prevent Apple, or any other company, from using its patented technology; it simply wants to be compensated for the violation of its patent rights.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting really tired of this crap. This company can't even make it on it's own without stabbing every single company in the back and taking their moola.
ohhh the apple fanboys how I love thee'. Apple is lawsuit happy..they will sue anybody and everybody over the most dumb **** like logos looking the same when clearly they don't, hell even filing a lawsuit against themselves! But uh oh somebody is filing a lawsuit against apple let's all ***** about it.Gimme a break..apple is getting what they deserve and that's a foot in the ***.It's called karma.

u think the company that is doing the sueing did the research? no they didnt. they pattened an idea, not a way to make it work and how it fuctions.

Just because we don't like what that company is doing doesn't make them a fanboy and we have all even complained about Apple's stupid lawsuit. So quit jumping on that fanboy bandwagon comment.

Calling us fanboys? You're stupid for saying that.
Asking for help is different from being stupid. Fanboys can rot in @#$%!
