Try a clean restore to 3.12 - how was the phone JB? What network are you on?

The newer 3GS (week 40 and after) have iBoot 359.3.2 which was specifically designed to block the 24kPwn exploit which allows untethered JB. The BB and FW have not changed, just the iBoot.

Iphone hacking never ceases to confuse people. I always thought that Blackra1n and Blacksn0w are the only answers for unlocking a iphone 3gs with BB 5.11.07 (legit activated or not). I happen to come across several comments in Dev team's blog suggesting to first restore the device to a custom activated firmware (from Pwnage tool). Now, you have a JB phone. Then, install Blacksn0w through Cydia. This way, I was told, that there won't be common wifi, push issues reported by using Blackra1n/blacksn0w combo.
Can gurus comment on this? Not only on the possibility but also on the better option to choose.

There appears to be a compatibility issue with BlackRa1n and wifi and youtubr that affects a small number of users. In these cases pwnage helps.
Push notification does not work on hactivated phones whichever method you use.

But, I am finding it slightly confusing. This is what I am thinking. Please tell me If I am right.
1) Iphone 3.1.2 (BB 5.11.7) can be jail broken by Blackra1n as well as Custom firmware through Pwnage tool
2) Custom ipsw's might solve the wifi, youtube issues that are affecting some people who have used blackra1n.
3) Pwnage tool doesn't have any such issues reported and sounds more stable and hence sounds better than blackra1n.
4) Push notif works only on legit activated phones because of the unique cert/key combo.
5) I can JB my 3.1.2 3gs OTB using custom ipsw's, then install Blacksn0w through Cydia and then run blacksn0w to unlock it. Will this work? Of course, I will retain my legit activation.
6) But, will this method work for new iBoot? I mean, I know I need to do tethered JB. Can I still run blackra1n after reboot if I have done step 5?

You are right except pwnage does not work with the new iBoot so BlackRa1n is your only option.

Not true my push notification does work on my hactivated iphone.
