This is my first JB attempt and I am on ATT with 3gs.
Model is MC135LL <-- heard before "C" was a problem
Modem Firmware 05.11.07

I don't want to have to tether everytime I reboot just to restart my phone and I want to be able to set everything back to factory when time comes.

I do not think I need to unlock, right?

My main desire is for tethering for internet access for my laptop from time to time.

Last Q... can I do that tethering from Ubuntu?

for those with WIFI problems - do the network reset

settings -> general -> reset -> reset network settings

this solved my problems on my 3gs..

my upgrade path is this...

3.1 OOB -> 3.1.2 PWNAGE -> blackrain -> blacksnow -> restore/sync -> wifi problems -> network reset.

So, has that been overcome? Or am I creating a problem for myself by JBing?

Then you probably don't have the new iboot and you won't have to worry about that jailbreaking problem. And no need to use any sn0w software if you don't need to unlock since you're on ATT

Everything seems to have worked GREAT!

Although MiFi tethering through Rock leaves a blue header on every screen that says I am still tethering... even though I turned it off!

Things seems to go wrong alot and pretty often if you go around with jailbreak. If the phone messes up (white apple SOD). You can always restore back to 3.1.2 custom or official. But DON'T go any further. Well actually best stay away from any official firmware at all. I learned my lesson the hard way. Also make sure you have a ECID for 3.1 with Cydia. In case you want to clean install with a official firmware and then blackra1n it. Since Apple is probably not going to let you restore to 3.1 with the next update.

Best is... Don't update anything official Apple throughs at you.

You should not update your FW beyond 3.12 but carrier updates are fine - MiWi is now not necessary as you can use the inbuilt tethering just by installing an ipcc that supports it - although if you do install a custom ipcc then you should avoid carrier updates as well.
The number of people that have problems with JB is miniscule compared to the numbers using it.

I've installed black rain on my iphone 2G , it jailbroke it , but when i open the applycation it does not show blacksnow , only cydia and Rock .
I;ve tried it several times ,does any one know how to unlock my 2G . please help

BlackSn0w is only for 3G/3GS not the 2G
For the 2G you need BootNeuter

I'm so happy, after 1 month using a crappy phone and my iPhone as an iPod, I was just jailbreaking a friends' brand new iPhone with 3.1.2 (05.07.11) and I saw Blacksnow in the options I installed it and after that I saw the T----- yeah!

Working well. No obvious side-effects.
Although I have not used any new features, either.

I did it so I could get internet through MiFi for me and a co-worker, when the need arises. I tested it once and it worked but wouldn't shut off!

I rebooted the iPhone and it was off so that is the only hiccup I have seen.

Are there things I should be loading for better productivity now that it is JBen?

Here's an update that may or may not help people - or wondering 'will it work'???

-original iphone is OOB 3.1/AT&T
-PWNAGE -> 3.1.2
-Blackrain/snow
-use tmob / non 3g mode

so i recently am on a trip to TOKYO, and was wondering 'will it work in 3G?' - I know there's no real reason for it NOT to, but you never know right???

so anyway turned on the 3G and didn't get anything at first..... but as I rebooted the device - I was able to get the local carriers DOCOMO and SOFTBANK.

WiFi was a bit fussy too, so i did the 'reset network settings' and all was good.

(gonna try to steal a SIM off one of the local guys to see if it will work)
