Pepsi's New iPhone App Puts Heat on Apple

Image via ABC News
The App Store has certainly shot down less provocative apps than this one, yet the marketing gurus behind Pepsi's new iPhone app managed to squeak this one through.
Even ABC News had to ask if this app is in poor taste.
Using the hashtag #pepsifail, some folks on Twitter blasted the app but pinned the blame on Apple rather than Pepsi.A new iPhone application from Pepsi that claims to help men "score" with women and then brag about it is drawing ire from all corners of the Web.
So what's all the controversy about? Essentially, the AMP Up Before You Score app, which is designed to promote Pepsi's new AMP Energy drink, is billed as a "roadmap to success with your favorite kinds of women" that will "change your game and raise your expectations." The app lets you "rank" and "categorize" women according to their personality type or appearance.
The "smart app" then helps you compile info, determine a good pickup line, and cull assistance from a host of other attributes to help you "score." After the fact, you can even log your experience in a "Brag List."
Should this app be condoned by Apple? That's not for me to decide. But on the basis of some recent apps it has rejected, I think it's safe to say that had this application been submitted by a company or business less powerful than Pepsi, it likely would have never been given the green light. What we're learning about the app approval process - especially this year - is that Apple will ignore its own guidelines when doing business with a particular party is good for Apple. And for Apple, working with Pepsi - which has a great following among young people - certainly isn't bad for business. But the new app has generated scores of online attacks from blogs, Twitter users and Facebook members. The popular female-focused blog Jezebel called it "unacceptable and ridiculously offensive."

What a joke. If a man atually needs an application and a computer generated pickup line to get a girl, that's just sad.

just like you imagined.

I downloaded it and I think it's kind of funny and purely for entertainment purposes only. I really doubt any thing in would be actually useful in the real world.

Leave it to the feminists to get offended over nothing ~_~ This app is for entertainment purposes only, because when was the last time you've ever heard of a pickup line being successful? Let alone a computer generated one? And if you're "offended" by the brag list or whatever it is, it's the girl being "bragged about"'s own fault for sleeping with a guy who obviously doesn't care about her.
tl;dr Tough ****, stuff crying over nothing

I just downloaded it and am testing it out. It's really not that offensive... except that it categorizes women (which some people may not like) and obviously the fact that it's supposed to "help you score". Playing with it though, I can easily tell that it's for entertainment purposes only. I think some people are just too up tight these days.

agreed, clearly a joke, and there are definitely far more offensive and objectifying things out there to rally against.
The real question is would there have been such a great outcry if Pepsi had simultaneously released an AMP Up Before You Score for Women?
quick note, that ABC link is a pretty good thread of app store related news bits.

Believe it or not, I made up a pick-up line that actually worked with 4 different women...You and the other person would of course have to be attracted to each other, or at least interested in some way and both have a sense of humor and in the mist of a "funny moment" say, "Hey, so you want to go back to my place? I'll make us some italian food....and then we can f&$k..." Then if the girl says something along the line of,"What?!" Excuse Me?!" or "Um, No..." You respond with, "What? you don't like Italian food?!" lmao I'm 4 for 4 so far

/agree its meant for entertainment. I got it yesterday afternoon after hearing all the hoopla about it and loled at the reviews.
I wonder what kind of response something from Cosmo or another female magazine would get if they put out an app like that (Then again, does it really take a woman THAT much work to pick up a guy lol)
But im sure it will be pulled so the pc nutcases can claim another victory
