First Look at the TomTom iPhone Car Kit

screencap of friends-only video on YouTube
Roger Åberg, a Swedish blogger and the CEO of MacFeber.se, got a hold of the new TomTom Car Kit, and took a brief video of himself unwrapping and examining it before making it a friends-only video on YouTube (thanks to user blacksti for the heads-up on that).
The kit has a solid appearance, and appears compact, with the GPS amplifier fitting into an enclosure little larger than the windshield-mount itself. The iPhone fits snugly, but it's obvious that any case will have to be removed before the phone can be mounted into the cradle.
MacFeber.se will put up the results of its test tomorrow.Last edited by Paul Daniel Ash; 10-05-2009 at 06:33 PM. Reason: removed dead link, removed moronic "and has took..."

This is simply not worth $120. I don't know why you would pay that amount of money when the Navigon app works just as well as any dedicated GPS. I wouldn't pay more than $40 for it (which is what I hoped it would be priced around). Overpriced, just like the TomTom app, which is worthless.
Navigon all the way!If I helped you out, please use the Thanks button ------------------------->

LOL! Why would you assume no one uses a case? From what I've seen, 90% of the user's I've seen have a case. Go to eBay and see how many phones with cracked screenes are being sold.
But if you have $120 to waste on something as ridiculous as this, then you probably wouldn't care about breaking your phone either. If I helped you out, please use the Thanks button ------------------------->

I bought a case for a reason and I wouldn't want my phone in direct sun light when it gets 120F+ here.

That's nice. But not for $120.

Over priced JUNK. I'm really glad I was able to "try" tomtom. I would have been really mad spending $100 and total JUNK.
Navigon FTW

It's a nice design, but not worth $120. I wish someone would take TomTom's powered dock look and feel and release one without the built-in GPS for about $20-35.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

hahaha everyone here is thinking the same. When I first saw that video, I was also thinking about the case. I'm NOT getting this for sure.

Personally, I use a combo between the Invisible Shield by Zagg to protect my phone from scratches as well as iFrogz hard case to protect it from drops.
I use both TomTom and Navigon on my phone and from personal experience here in LA, the GPS signal using the built in iPhone receiver isn't as reliable as it should be. The phone would loose GPS signal just by passing under an over pass or a large big rig. The worst would be when traveling on the highway, TomTom and Navigon would state I am located in some bogus location before figuring out my real location while mid travel.
I don't mind removing the hard case temporarily seeing as I have the Invisible Shield anyway. Any if it is true that this GPS receiver is capable of being used with other apps like Navigon, I think I might give it a go and drop my dedicated Garmin GPS.

I don't use a case and would like this to supplement CoPilot - but not at that price. Shame.

Why do you think TT is better - IMHO it fails on every count.
The GPS on the iPhone is so much worse than on every other phone it is unbelievable, the information it passes to the s/w is a fraction of nmea standards and needs to be requested. I truly is awful. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.
