The Reason the DevTeam can't do a factory unlock, is not only because factory means factory, but becuase this unlock method sends the IMEI number back to Apple systems, so that IMEI never has to be checked again.

There was a post on TheiPhoneBlog about how some users near the end of the contract were able to go in and ask for their phones to be unlocked as the carrier didn't hold the rights to the phone anymore as the phone was paid for.

Something tells me if that were the case we'd have some ATT employees in here that were unlocking for $$.

The model number also defines if it can be unlocked.
AT&T phones can not be unlocked, not by AT&T or Apple.

Do you want to explain what you mean by that comment?
