I'm afraid I may need to exchange my 3GS phone since I may have fried the battery. If i get one from the Apple store, and it still has 3.0 or 3.0.1, am I able to use the regular jailbreak and unlock methods?

If you happen to be given a 3GS with 3.0.x, then you will be able to use the redsn0w/cydia jailbreak and unlock method.

Do NOT restore afterward. The devteam has yet to release tools for 3GS without cydia "on files".

So don't screw up you're phone after jailbreak and/or unlock

It's interesting people are saying apple won't let them out of the store without installing FW... I was fairly positive that geniuses couldn't do an in-store restore/upgrade.

Now you would obviously need to go to your appointment with 3.1 FW installed, but the only thing apple would do after handing you the refurb is a soft activation.

Apple is pretty good at this. Not sure how they do it. Looks like they update the stock before releasing anything. Again, not sure how they manage to do it.

as for ECID, and files to be retrieve from the 3GS, you no longer need to do this, as Cydia can do it for you

FIRST, DOING THIS IS ONLY REQUIRED FOR 3GS OWNERS, ALL OTHER IPHONES ARE SAFE AGAINST THIS BY DESIGN, IT'S A NEW SECURITY MEASURE FROM APPLE

with 3Gs
you need:
3Gs on firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1
redsn0w 0.8
Mac
Windows
Linux
iPhone 3GS 3.0 firmware ipsw file
3.0_3GS

all you do now, is jailbreak the phone using redsn0w 0.8, and point redsn0w to the v3.0 file you've downloaded when it asks

after the jaiblreak, run cydia on your phone, install all the essential updates, cydia will close, start it again, and it will ask you if it can put your phone data on file for later use

once you've done this, and cydia displays "phone data on file" at the top, you are sorted

this will enable you to always be able to downgrade to 3.0 software if you've updated accidentally, however, it doesn't allow you to downgrade the basedband, so, you won't be able to network unlock the phone unless an updated unlock is created

Thanks but I also stated that I had missed both chances of getting the files needed. I believe I said I was stuck on the 3.01 until 3.1 jb is out. If I didnt say it here I said it somewhere else

If you just want to update to 3.1 you can just hit update in iTunes. Or the files are available from the download section on this site.

How can they force you to upgrade your software? Last time I checked, I am the customer. Tell them tough !@*$. I know telling them you don't have your SIM or you are using your SIM in another phone temporarily may stop them from forcing the issue too.

How can they force you to update? They can't. But on the 3GS they can stop you loading anything but the latest FW if you have to restore (unless you have your signed files)

BTW - you're not really still on 3.0 Beta 4 are you?

You can't tether in 3.1 unless your carrier supports it.

3.1 jailbreak will be out soon enough, although it might be permanantly locked but i dont care i have AT&T anyway i just wanna jailbreak my damn phone to get my sick iElegance PRO theme back damn

I'm using Addition's iPhone Modem 3 for tethering, works just fine. I thought the $10 was well worth not having to deal with the hassle of ATT / Apple. Just my two pennies...

It's been quite a while since Apple released the OS 3.1 for iPhone and there's been a lot of confusion regarding it's Jailbreak Status etc. Therefore, here's a summary of do's and dont's

• According to ChronicDev, the 3.1 GM seed is still vulnerable.
• It has been confirmed by MuscleNerd from DevTeam that iTunes 9 doesn't interfere with jailbreaking so you can update iTunes but make sure that you do not update your device firmware to 3.1 yet if you want to jailbreak. UPDATE: Jailbreak for OS 3.1 has been released but for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1G ONLY and NOT iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G and iPod Touch 3G! Therefore, update only if you have older hardware
• Saurik confirms once you update to 3.1, there's no way to downgrade to an earlier version as iTunes no longer signs the older firmware. Therefore, if you do not have your ECID information saved, you're completely stuck! For those who have the information saved, there should be a solution out soon. UPDATE: 3.1 can now be downgraded to 3.0 but remember, the baseband is not downgraded along with the firmware, so you might still be permanently locked even though you can now jailbreak 3.1 in future.
• The new firmware also includes a new baseband which means none of the current unlocking tools will work. Therefore, if you upgrade an iPhone 3G with bootloader newer than 5.8 or an iPhone 3GS, there are chances that your device might get permanently locked.

Verdict: If you EVER want to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G / iPhone 3GS again, DO NOT UPDATE YET!

friend yours is very useful information. I did jail broke my iphone 3g by using redsnow. couple of days back when i connected my iphone in my itunes it asked me to upgrade to 3.1. I entered yes after that everything gone. my cydia and all the applications. now again when i tried with my redsnow and previous fimware its not jail breaking. For i phone3g 3.1, is there any special redsnow and filmware to jailbreak. please give me a solution to jailbreak again. thanks in advance

You can use pwnage on a Mac to JB
RedSn0w for 3.1 has not yet been released.
You can not now unlock but obviously you don't need to.

After having to restore to 3.1 (missed the ECID message on Cydia), I had no idea what to do. I actually was having issues with the 3G signal or bad internal antenna, called Apple and they made an appointment on the Apple Store here in Atlanta, went there and they looked at it, decided to give a new one, and guess what, it was 3.0.1! woohoo!, which by the way doesn't have the issues I was having. Went home, got it going with redsn0w, JB again, I am a happy man again . To my surprise, when Cydia was installed, gave me the "Make my life easier" button, clicked and now I'm back jailbroken and Cydia has my 3.1 ECID SSHS on file, nice because I missed it the first time, thank you Cydia!

still patiently waiting for a 3gs jailbreak... i hadnt jailbroken my 3gs yet and didnt even think about what i was doing when i did the 3.1 update... dont care anything about unlocking but not having my themes is bugging the crap out of me.
