I have been able to redeem codes in the App Store portal since 3.0.

Also, unlike the 2G & 3G, the 3GS requires a firmware<-->device signature process done during restore/update by Apple (determined in part using the ECID of the device), which is used as a gateway to verify a 'legit' firmware installation. That's why GeoHot, the Dev Team, and various others said one needed to get those device-specific iBSS and iBEC certificates for one's 3GS before 3.1 hit the streets.
Even then, this 'no downgrade for 3GS users' news just means that the jailbreak teams will need to return to the iPhoneOS 1.x days w.r.t. jailbreaking: find software/other exploits to use as vectors to inject the jailbreak for [new/upgraded] 3GS users.

Seems to me that Apple has done it again... those morons! Don't they see that we users and buyers of their products (iPhones) want freedom to use the devices as we want and need. To me 3.1 has no benefits and lots of sh-t! Plus, now, there's no tethering! that's absurd! I'm confident that the glorious Dev Team and others will too break this futile attempt of Apple to make us do what they want.
What's the matter, Steve (Jobs)?
I hope that he lives a long time and continue to bring us very cool stuff, but I also hope that his legacy won't be tarnished by these recent actions.
My first computer was a Mac 512K and been a Mac user ever since and hope to continue to do so... Don't let all of us down. Remember that is thanks to all of us millions that the company has soared.
I hope I don't seem very bitter, but some times I can't help feeling sad...

lets assume there will be JB for 3.1 soon
Will it be possible to do restore to 3.0.1 using iTunes 8 cause AFAIK no way with v9
Will we have to use fake soft from Dev-Team? Who knows what else is behind iTunes 9?

Aptbackup makes a list of your cydia apps and re-installs them for you after a clean restore (and jailbreak). I've never used it, but I've used Pkgbackup which is very similar (a paid application... I can't recall the reason I decided to use it rather than the free aptbackup to tell you the truth but being a cheapskate I'm sure there was one) and it worked like a charm going from 3.0 to 3.0.1. These programs don't actually store the apps but a list of the apps you have installed and then they reinstall them for you. Pretty handy. Appbackup just saves your App Store Applications settings. For example, you might lose all your Gas Log data if you restore even though you would get the App itself re-installed. Appbackup restores the data.

ok. i took the plunge. upgraded to 3.1
not quite what i expected.
all the programs i had hid using sbsettings are still hidden and all games/apps i had in folders (categories) i can no longer see.
if u want to upgrade yourself i'd suggest putting as much back to norm as poss first.
09-10-2009, 06:18 PM #217reason to upgrade
i have read this whole damn thread-- i also read apple's technical security briefings that were published yesterday with the upgrade and am apparently the only one who has.
one major security fix in 3.1 involves a bigass security hole in the webkit for safari on the touch and phone. right now, when using safari it passes referrer information to the next site you visit. that's normal but what isn't normal about it is that currently safari passes your userID and password of that site to the next site! so if you do online banking and then look at free porn in the ukraine you are seriously screwed.
i am not upgrading firmware yet until i can jailbreak because there are some apps i have to run outside of the sandbox as i own an external gps chip connected to my touch2gen.
i am running the new itunes and it sucks. the big deal is vinyl style record albums so you can look at animated lyrics etc. unfortunately it is more of a multimedia experience that impedes searching for non-tweener music as the names of albums and songs get truncated while the album icons are too small to read and do not enlarge.
regarding re-arranging app icons, you don't need to upgrade for that unless you need to do this in itunes. presently, there is a free mac app that synchs with the iphone to rearrange app icons called "movement.app" and it works fine with five app wide pages whilst itunes only manages four rows.
i will keep coming back until the devteam says it's ok to upgrade my firmware.
and you rogers-using canadians bragging about your MMS, your stuck in canada! go down to your timmy horton's and drink some fake powdered apple cider. who gives a r@tsa@@!

well the problem is this.. if apple release 3.1.1 on 25th for the iphone to allow MMS then any new JB method that the Dev team comes up with will prolly be screwed. Another thing that can happen is that instead of a software update, it will be just a carrier update which makes more sense. I dunno all i know i am not upgrading till we all know the full scoop !!

DownLoad -Funambol- from the AppStore. Its free and works! Set it up. Once your done with with the setup and sign in. Click settings and contacts. Make it says from phone to server! Confirm by going online to the site that your contacts are there!
Now Delete Back Ups from iTunes because when you Back up a hacked phone stuff always goes wrong. No need for details, No need for back ups.
Now RESTORE and Update your iPhone. NO back ups! After its done, Click Setup as new phone.
Now Sync your Apps. Get on Funambol and sync contacts. Make sure the setting is on server to phone. Done. Fresh iPhone with your contacts and apps. FRESH as it can get.
The best part about this App is lets say you go to the Apple store and they give you a new iPhone. You can DL the App and sync your contacts right there. Cant beat that..!
