Default Official Apple iPhone Unlock Possible!?!

It is possible to have an iPhone unlocked via Apple rather than jailbreaking and running ultrasn0w according to Olly Farshi of

Being located out of Europe Farshi is subscribed to a carrier other than AT&T (of course). His carrier is Sonera in Finland and he bought an iPhone 3G with them last year when they were the fresh hot and new thing to have.

Farshi, like most iPhone users, bought his iPhone 3G complete with a 2 yr carrier contract. When the iPhone 3GS arrived on the scen he upgraded. Normal thing. Tons of us did the same. The difference lies with the carrier Sonera who gave him the option to pay off the remainder of his original 3G contract which he did.

With the iPhone 3G contract paid off Farshi set after getting it unlocked officially - it is his and the carrier had been paid off after all. He contacted Sonera who made not of his IMEI # and submitted it to Apple. Next time Farshi syncd iTunes asked him to install an official carrier update, which he did. Afterwards iTunes popped up the unlocked screen (above) and now his iPhone 3G is unlocked officially by Apple.

There ya go. Carrier update -> unlocked. Simple. Good luck getting AT&T to even listen to you if you want to do the same thing though

Update: Yes we are well aware you can buy factory unlocked iPhones that have never been locked for $1000+. The above is concerning unlocking a locked iPhone.

that happened to me before too...

I bought an iPhone 3G 8Gb in Berlin, Germany which originally was from Poland.
I had it jailbroken and used a x-sim.....I put in the t-mobile sim without the x-sim and restored to 2.2.1 and as soon as that was done (I already downloaded pwnage tool and everything) iTunes surprised with exactly that screen!!!
I don't know what happened there, I don't how to explain it, but ever since my 3G is unlocked. I didn't need yellowsn0w and I don't need ultrasn0w now. It just works with every sim card.......
why? hell, I really don't know!!

Hmm... I wonder if Apple will unlock my iPhone 2G which I brought to Canada..

I thought this was common knowledge!?!

I unlocked my original iPhone 3G through my carrier (Optus in Australia), I was still in contract and they unlocked it with no ccost or drama. They said it could take up to a week, but it only took a few hours.

The have no problem unlocking a phone that's on contract as they still have the contract over you. My second 3G (after I broke the screen of my first and the non-apple repair guy stuffed it up completely) I bought on ebay. Officially unlocked by vodafone.

Check out and there are heaps. Starting at about US$1000

I always wondered why it is not possible to spoof the apple server and direct iTunes to some server out there that holds the secret to unlocking it directly via iTunes.

Now that there are phones out there that are unlocked like that, can't anybody analyse the Network traffic that is going on and recreate the "server side" and the host it for us?

This has been available for most of Europe for a good year now I believe since they're awesome like that.

But then you think about it and realize: It's Europe

Is there a file it downloads and lets this happen or is it direct from Apple?
Maybe someone should try to patch iTunes to let this happen?

Nice to know. I hope AT&T gets to do this someday.

AT&T sucks. Don't get too excited about this guys, here is what happened to me when I tried to pull this stunt (although it IS possible). I suppose you're best shot would be to produce "proof" that you are leaving the US.

It's not that simple. The carrier basically contacts apple and whitelists the unit's IMEI for unlocking. Apple then sends the unlock carrier file to that unit and works only for that unit.

This was reported a while back, just around the time the 3G started selling in France I believe.

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.
