In the real world people have choice.
In the USA where everyone uses different standards that just isn't going to happen.
I can use my iPhone on any network in Europe (as it's unlocked) but Verizon use CDMA, T-Mobile use 1700Mhz and AT&T use 850/1900Mhz - all virtually unheard of outside of the USA.
The rest of the world has standardised the USA has diversified, it's not as simple as just unlocking - you need different hardware in the USA.He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

Lol! Its about time something was done. The iPhone is great and all but Apple/AT&T is digging its own grave by pulling crap like this. Remember Microsoft anti-trust case?

apple-expects-google-voice-app-developers-to-pay-refunds-out-of-pocket

And: (FCC sends letters)
washingtonpost.com
Update: AT&T responded to this post with the following statements:
AT&T does not manage or approve applications for the App Store. We have received the letter and will, of course, respond to it.Customers can use any compatible GSM phone on our network, not just the ones we?ve approved and sell. And they also can use apps we don?t approve. We don?t approve iPhone applications.
So there you have it. You can use any mobile app you like on AT&T?unless it is an iPhone app (that's been rejected by Apple). Does Apple ever reject apps at the request of AT&T though? Maybe they'll give the FCC a straight answer.

Notice that AT&T said approve, while not denying they rejected. Oh those crafty devils.

Its about time that US ends all these exclusivity agreements and let the FREE MARKET prevail.
There's no benefit of such deals for the consumer... this is the new trick companies invented after number portability to retain the customers.
The greedy corporations keep innovating ways to milk poor customers... why not compete in an open market and let the fittest survive.
I bet the moment iPhone is allowed to be sold to Tmobile/Verizon the data plans will become cheaper.

GET RIPPED.
Maybe Apple will pull a anti-FOX: allow ANYTHING through their censors in fear of the FCC (as opposed to how FOX was so paranoid they censored an animated ***).

Yeah, even if it's unlocked and sold as is, your only real option* is still AT&T and Apple doesn't seem to be in a rush in making a CDMA version. And hope you're not expecting a T-Mobile 3G compatible iPhone because of whatever weird *** frequency NO ONE ELSE IN THE WORLD uses.
*with 3G network
What's really funny whenever someone mentions Verizon is that they had first dibs on the iPhone and they said no. Oh man I can't imagine how they must be feeling right now. All over Visual Voicemail hahahaha.
