What OS are you on? Can you see the file with a .zip extension or is it that when you double click on it it tries to unzip?

If you are on vista you have to go to Folder Options (under Organize/Windows Explorer), and untick "hide extension for known type" under the "view" tab. Only then you can rename the .zip to .ipsw.
Advice:
Stop using Internet Explorer for browsing, it is a really awful browser, it downloads .zip instead of .ipsw for some odd reason
:P move firefox or something better.

Haha. That's why I just tell everyone not to upgrade until I tell them to.

I keep telling people, to unplug it from the computer, then re plug in to computer. That should make it reboot and work. Can someone confirm this works please.

The main cause of waiting for reboot hangs is using the wrong ipsw for the device. If you are 100% certain you have the right one (they have very similar names so if in doubt, ask) then unplugging the cable at the computer (not the phone end) and plugging it back in again should solve the problem.

Slight annoyance...
I have jailbroken twice now since the 3.0.1 update but I am still having an annoying issue.
First of all, I used to be on AT&T and I closed my account. I am still contemplating which new carrier to go through but I think I will settle on t-mobile this week.
I did a restore to 3.0 to clear my phone. Upgraded to 3.0.1 via iTunes. Selected "new phone", to avoid the battery problem I heard of, and loaded my backup on for all of my contacts et cetera. Jailbroke the phone using redsn0w .8 and the 3.0 IPSW. Everything is functional. However, I am receiving the following message after respringing et cetera...
"Waiting for activation
This may take some time."
I looked into it and tried letting iTunes activate after selecting new phone again but it went nowhere. Is this just because I canceled my service? If I do an unlock now (before getting t-mobile even) will this message finally go away? Although I have been reading horror stories of people using ultrasn0w .91-1 and it's screwing with people's service left right and center. I intend on upgrading my girlfriend's iPhone as well and she is on China Mobile. I can live without a phone for a few days but I know she could not afford to with some of her work and all. I simply dislike leaving it as is with her phone exploitable...
I appreciate the helpLast edited by inamra; 08-06-2009 at 12:35 PM.

Forget what I said...
This is the phone searching for a signal. Since you have no active sim card in your phone it just keeps looking and looking. This will stop when you put any sim card in that has serviceLast edited by Melech518; 08-06-2009 at 12:38 PM.

Thanks Melech.
I guess my only concern now is waiting for the dev team on ultrasn0w to figure out what's wrong. .9 worked perfectly fine for my girlfriends iPhone but it's no longer on Cydia now -_-;... and their newest one is just giving everyone grief it seems.

UltraSn0w 0.91-1 works for 99.9% of people the people with problems are a very, very small minority.

Yep- the unplug/re-plug got my reboot to start.
Finished reinstalling/re-syncing. Everything seems to be working fine. This really was easy as pie.
Thanks to all who contributed.Last edited by mr117; 08-06-2009 at 02:25 PM.
