Unlocked iPhones Bricked by new Updates?

Apple is reportedly saying they have "discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."

What does this mean to all us unlocked iPhone users? It means do NOT update your firmware yet, is all. The update is due out this week sometime, and iTunes doesn't force you to update, so just don't. Within a few days, there will be a fix out for upgrading unlocked iPhone's to the new firmware, not to worry. Just make sure that when it first comes out, you don't do the update yet.

Forgive the noobish question, but by unlock do you mean modded (such as custom applications and themes) or just those who unlocked their phone to use it with another service provider?

That's what i want to known also. I only have a custom skin using summertheme, and a custom ringtone. I still use AT and T and everything. Should I just restore it now?

I'm dying to know because I just purchased my iPhone last Friday, and modded it because I heard that there haven't been any problems. If I can't update my iPhone without bricking it I'm going to be pissed.

The only modifications I have done to my iPhone are installing the Installer.app, downloading and installing some custom apps, and changing themes with Summerboard. I'm an AT&T customer so I hope that I'll be fine.

They are speaking strictly about SIM unlocking (i.e. using a SIM card other than AT&T)

If anything custom programs, skins etc will probably just be made to do a complete restore as the other updates have.

I think you are. I was reading somewhere that even if you restore your iPhone back to factory settings, it is still 'unlocked'.

This is ONLY for SIM unlocks. And again, its only for a few days, until a fix is developed for it.

Correct, restoring the phone in iTunes does not reset the phone's modem firmware which is changed when you "unlock" it....there is a tutorial in the early stages on how to reverse this...look around

Just wait it out a couple of days after the firmware release so they have a chance to crack it. From the press release, it sounds like Apple is purposefully going to brick your phone for doing this...so just hold off from the update

Well hey, there is no reason not to unlock, if you need an unlocked iPhone. Just don't update for a few days after the firmware is released, so a fix can be put together. The phone will have the EXACT same functionality it will have if you unlocked it today.
