How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS on 3.0 [redsn0w/windows]

This is a guide on how to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware using redsn0w 0.8 for windows. The process is identical to all the other previous redsn0w guides. This will just jailbreak your iPhone. It will not unlock it. To unlock the iPhone 3GS use ultrasn0w (info here). This guide is for 3.0 only. NOT 3.1.

Your iPhone 3GS should already be on firmware 3.0 before you begin.
First download redsn0w 0.8 (windows)
Download 3.0 iPhone 3GS firmware .ipsw

Extract and then run redsn0w. Click browse.

Find your iPhone 3GS 3.0 firmware file. Select it and click Open.

redsn0w says your IPSW has been successfully identified. Click next.

redsnow starts doing its thing.

Select your options. Click next.

Follow the directions to get your iPhone into restore mode.

redsn0w starts uploading everything to your iPhone.

You will see the done screen. You can click finish at this time. On your iPhone you'll see some text and the pwnage icon for awhile as your iPhone is being jailbroken. Do not mess with it during this time. When it is finished your iPhone will be on the lock screen fully jailbroken

does push work, because i just noticed my push isn't working with the purplera1n rc2. I have ATT, did not hacktivate, did not install ultrasn0w. I can't get a push to come through on prowl and i opened up im+ today and all these messages starting popping up. Can anyone fill us in as to what is going on. Does jailbreaking break push???

I think most asked question will be somewhere along the lines...
If I already put purplera1n is it necessary to put redsn0w for any reason and if so what is recommended process.

Im not so sure its the hacktivation, because i am having problems and im not hacktivated.

If you already jailbroke your phone using purplera1n you do not need to use redsn0w. My recommendation is that purplera1n is currently working better than redsn0w

IF, thats a big if, you want to replace purplera1n with redsn0w then do a DFU restore back to the original 3.0 ipsw through iTunes. Then run this tutorial for redsn0w.

problem, when i'm in cydia for a little while it just crashes. it does it every time i've tried so far

yeah is JB'n affecting our push? cuz I just noticed an option missing from settings.

well i did purplerain to my 3gs on a mac. It was a lot quicker and easier than redsnow but I just trust Dev team so much more. Push was working fine with the purplera1n for me, and the redsnow push works great. Cydia also opens up so much quicker on a 3gs!! and winterboard works great

I do have ATT so idk if thats what deals with push or not

when i download the firmware from the provided link it download in zip file. I extracted it and its scattered in folders and files???

haa i got it. all you mac usres having problems just have to download the firware at the top of this post. then go through redsnow and poof everything is quick and fast.

Im not getting past "uploading ramdisk", it just keeps freezing.

Change .zip to .ipsw

Did you use Safari to download the files? If that's the case use firefox or other browser to download the file.

i have been trying all morning to jb my 3GS. I have followed all the steps. the newest article states to disconnect the phone and hold the home button until the itunes logo pops up. i have followed the steps and same crap nothing works. Unfortunately, this has become harder and harder to jb with redsn0w.

I jailbroke with purplera1n and it worked fine, but thought I'd try out this way just for kicks. First attempt left the App Store icon blank and it would not open. Going to try again.
