Heres my question.

I have an iPhone 3Gs, I can activate it legitimately. I plan on using purplera1n to jailbreak, install cydia, then ultrasn0w to unlock. Should I then restore the iPhone 3Gs, will the ultrasn0w unlock get wiped?

I ask this because with my original iPhone the unlock doesnt get wiped with a firmware restore.

So the only method to "hacktivate" for tmobile is still to pop in an at prepaid card?

You dont' even need an AT&T card to hacktivate.

Just purplera1n, then get the hacktivated lockdownd file, then use DiskAid to put into usr/libexec and off you go.

If you "restore" your phone by going into iTunes and clicking restore and reinstall the firmware from Apple's servers, then you will lose both your jailbreak and unlock. You can maintain all of your data from the pre-jailbroken state, though, since Purplera1n patches the firmware rather than making a custom IPSW and installing it. It's a very short process that leaves your iPhone with all data it had prior to the jailbreak (text messages, contacts, email accounts, etc.). So if your question is to ask if you need to "restore from backup" in iTunes, this is not necessary. I have not tried this, but it should work (not that you'd need to).

Yes. This was an issue with the pre-jailbroken software as well. It is a known bug and Apple is supposedly working on it for the 3.1 release. For me at least, the problem seems to manifest after you delete an App Store app and reboot the phone, though I have heard of other ways to trigger the bug as well. I've had no troubles with it so long as I do not delete App Store apps directly from the phone. You can delete unwanted apps directly from iTunes by unchecking their checkbox.

Apple's advice to remedy the issue is to restore the device's firmware and resync from backup. By this method, you will not lose any application data. Alternatively, you can stop syncing apps from the Applications tab in iTunes, then resync the apps. This will cause you to LOSE all application data, however. This is why they recommend restoring the device. After the restore you can jailbreak.

Also Cyntak throws you into safe mode. I cant get Vibrus 3G to work right either. BTW I installed Ultrasn0w but didnt reactivate. Is there a way to know if it worked? Thanks!

Thanks for all that info. What I was hoping would work is, unlock using Ultrasnow and then restore (not from backup) and keep the unlock. Cos I dont need or want to be jailbroken, I just want to be unlocked. I can activate without Purplerain.

do you have tricker threeG working as well with that tweak? if you do dude you're the man that is the main thing that i'm trying to get to work but apparently no luck with it but if that's the process you're saying that works it'll be awesome.

p.s. if i have official carrier do I need to use "hacktivation" or no ?

Can anyone confirm if internet access is required? I'm currently using my iPhone 3Gs to tether my laptop because I just moved into my new house therefore I have no internetz.

Hey guys, here's my situation: legit activated 3GS, I have run both Mac and Windows Purplera1ns+Freezes multiple times, however Cydia crashes out immediately every time. I've rebooted the phone, rejailbroken over and over, no luck. Any ideas?

amazing job worked like a charm to JB it. had to run freeze twice, and after running cydia it kept crashing the phone and put it into safe recovery mode all the time, am back on the restore. waiting on a more set method that is not in beta...

I have lost vibrate as well, I posted a couple pages back and had the same problem. JB mine yesterday and have had the problem since, can't figure out how to get it back. VIbrate doesn't work with anything.

An iPhone 3G docks fits fine as the 3GS has the same dimensions as the 3G. You can pick one up at an Apple Store. I've also seen them at WalMart.

Sorry, as of now there is no way to unlock without also having a jailbreak.

OK I had a program installed that was causing a mobile sub. problem so I uninstalled that (TRICKER3G) and now APP store works again..
