Since Apple released it's first iPod, they've been using a 30 Pin Dock Connector to manage charging and syncing options on devices such as iPods and even iPhones. Due to a recent agreement made, they might soon have a Micro-USB Port on the iPhone in place of or in addition to the traditional dock connector!

According to a latest report, Apple along with 10 other mobile phone companies agreed to make smartphone devices supporting Micro-USB for the European market. The main cause for this agreement was the need to reduce multiple number of cables being used by European customers for their electronic devices, mainly smartphones

The companies involved in the agreement account for around 90% market share in the smartphone market. These include Motorola, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments along with Apple to name a few.

The new devices will be sold with a standardized charger beginning from year 2010 as per the report.

P.S. Apple might still not add a Micro-USB as there is no "legal binding" and it is just for the ones volunteering.

It's been on the news over here most of the day. Will be interesting to see whether the iPod range will follow suit or if they'll just stick to the iPhone. And I don't believe it is "optional" anymore - I believe it was something they all agreed they would do but now it's been rubber-stamped by the EU.

Well Apple just might do it... this looks like a Go Green kinda thing... universal chargers mean people don't throw old ones away... reuse etc... Apple always seem to wanna be Green.. so there's a good chance imo.

I think the only thing apple is going to do is to include a dock-connector to mini usb adapter in europe...
there is no way they are giving up the 30-pin dock connector!!!

I agree. It would be alot easier for apple to just change the connector on the dock to a mini USB. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Apple will simply ship iPods & iPhones with a 30-pin to MicroUSB adapter thats all. They are not gonna change their products to MicroUSB so keep your panties on!

Actually the first iPod synced through Firewire, the 2nd generation iPod introduced the 30-pin connector, but w/e.

Probably. If they actually did switch to miniUSB on iPhones they could fit bigger speakers which would be nice.

I wonder if it would work as part of the agreement to just ship an adapter... I wouldn't think that to be beyond these comapnies.
