How to Download iPhone Firmware .ipsw with Safari
So in the last few days I have received countless messages of people asking why their downloaded .ipsw doesn't work. I have also seen the same question asked on the forums in many many threads. The vast majority of the time it is because they used Safari to download the .ipsw and Safari decided to go ahead and extract it.
If you are using Safari and want to download a .ipsw follow this guide to change a setting and everything will be good.
Open Safari.

Go to the menu bar (top of your screen) and Click Safari.

Select Preferences.

Go to General.

Uncheck the Open "safe" files after downloading box.

Close preferences and find your firmware here and download it.

Yes, after you spend 15 seconds unchecking a box in Safari it never unchecks itself and will allow you to download firmware for the foreseeable future.
Note: Safari will probably label the download .ipsw.zip. Delete the .zip

I've always had that option un-ticked. I never want my downloads to open automatically.

Same, and @mystery, IE blows (I thought everyone knew that by now), and Safari 4.0 on a mac is more likable than FF.

I've always used safari....All you have to do is download the file, then open up the trash, and there is your firmware file
(you do have to remove the .zip at the end first though)

Literally takes 2 seconds to just add .ipsw to the end of the file...FF and IE Blow in my opinion...notice I said OPINION

yeah, i use Firefox on both my mac and PC
It makes things so much easier when downloading and just surfing the web
plus all the add-ons
i was going more toward firefox because yes, IE does 'blow'
but i've never really been a big fan of Safari on any computer.Last edited by mysteryskater125; 06-23-2009 at 01:29 PM. Reason: added quote

im sure he was referring to a previous post same as i, where the user mentioned his preference to 'downloading' firefox and going through that whole ordeal instead of a simple checkbox click in safari. he edited his post afterward when he realized how fail it was originally.
anyway, lets not turn this into another cliche browser wars thread.
im sure the info given by threadstarter came in handy for many,Last edited by 305; 06-23-2009 at 04:37 PM.

good info...
personally i have been using safari in getting my ipsw. i guess it would be better for people to stop bashing or comparing which browser is better. firefox users, why cant they skip this thread and move on this doesnt involve their preferred browsers anyway. Safari users start changing your preferences and move on as well.
lets put and end to this...

wow that is way to much ... just take the zip file out of the trash and edit the name so it ends in IPSW... simple as that
