Features Found! Invert Screen, Voiceover, More - iPhone 3G S Accessibility Options

Found new features in the iPhone 3G S! There is an Accessibility option in general settings that does some real cool stuff. Big props to MMi user jonban for leaving me a visitor message tipping us off!

White on Black

My personal favorite. Throwing the White on Black toggle inverts the colors phone-wide. Gives your iPhone a psychedelic look everywhere, including apps. This will have to do while we're waiting for the iPhone 3G S to be jailbroken so we can do some themeing.

This issue with this feature is the iPhone has trouble running some applications (games) leading to screen flicker. How this feature helps Accessibility, I have no idea.

Voice Over

For people having trouble reading the screen Apple has introduced VoiceOver. When on and you click ANY menu item the iPhone selects it, and reads it to you. To then select the menu item you have to double tap -- anywhere on the screen. This works iPhone-wide.

Zoom

Also for people having trouble reading the screen the iPhone 3G S can zoom in closer, anywhere. Turn the feature and double tap the screen with three fingers. Hold an move your fingers up and down after the second tap to zoom in and out. This feature also works phone-wide. The phone remembers how much you have zoomed and keeps that zoom setting as you browse through the menus. To turn off double tap with three fingers again.

Speak Auto-test

With this feature on the iPhone 3G S speaks what pops up in the auto-text correction box when you are typing.

Mono Audio

Simply makes audio mono instead of stereo.

I was wondering when you were going to post something about this. Found it myself last night as well...very cool stuff!

Maybe these are some steps by Apple to to get people not to jailbreak??? Could we see more Accessibility/Theming options on future Firware Updates???

This clearly isn't meant to work as a theme. It is meant for the hearing and visually impaired.

How did you get the battery indicator % to show up on the 3Gs

i know you can when you edit the plists on the regular 3.o for the 3G...

but for on topic post.. i was using it for an hour today.. then got old.. to retro for me

I wouldn't say so. It isn't like themes have been an elusively hard thing for Apple to implement. They simply don't want to. Theming and making handicapped usability on a phone are two different things entirely.

Mine did not. There is a setting somewhere that I found. I don;t think it was under accessibility but it was under the settings.

EDIT: Under Usage there is a battery indicator slide tab

Not if you are deaf (or nearly deaf) in one ear and are listening to phone/music through headphones.

Go to Settings --> General --> Usage to turn on/ off battery percentage thing

Can't wait to get my 3Gs... just waiting a couple months until jailbreak is out and the first line of buggy phones to be corrected(remember the 3G yellow screens).

The best of those features is the white on black. All the others are simply ***. I wish they would've gave us MMS quicker or at least emoticons instead
