I updated my 2G to 3.0 from 2.2.1 via iTunes 8.2 Joejose. Only issue I had was no YouTube. Hope that helps. And I'm back on 2.2.1 fully unlocked & jailbroken now.

So u had 2.2.1 and updated to 3.0 and it worked without needing to be activated???

Yep. I've got a 2G phone mind so not sure if it'll work on a 3G

The jailbreak method will NOT work on the 3GS people... Jailbreaking uses a hardware exploit in the 1st gen and the 3G. The 3GS is entirely new hardware which Apple would have made sure didn't have the same exploit.

My 2g is no longer recognized by my computer. I plug the usb in an nothing happens, so what do i need to do in order for itunes to even recognize my iphone is plugged in?

Lol. Yeah, kinda sucks.. I'm on t-mobile and I've already ordered my 32Gb 3G S, it's gonna get here very soon but I won't get it till July22nd as it was bought for me as a b-day present. However, my contract with t-mobile is up on the 24th of July.. So, we'll see what happens. Haha.

Ok not sure why or how it worked but here is what I did:

Finally downloaded 3.0 (servers must have been bogged down)
Opened iTunes and selected to do a restore
took about 10min and whala I am on 3.0 and still unlocked/Jailbroken.

Iphone used was NOT my 3g but my 1st gen 16 gb. This phone is on Vodafone Germany (not a iPhone carrier).

---So far no issues...
- I didnt have visual voice mail before so I cant comment on it now (current carrier Vodafone does not support)
- Wifi is working fine
- SMS texting is fine
- calling is fine
- phone seems to run alot faster with no lags
- apps open slightly faster than my 3g
- the speaker seems to be a little louder
- MMS works (Vodafone/ALL carriers in Europe support...have been for years now)
- Push??? no noticable diff in e-mail...
- Safari does not lagg and cash is working great
- Landscape/landscape/landscape is everywhere... KEWL!!!
- copy paste ok
- paired my MOT stereo BT headset and can "rockout with my cables out" :-)
- No Compass - its a 2g I believe this function only works on the 3GS

Has anyone else had the same success?
