Will this work for 2.2.1 Iphone 3G with 2.30 modem version ? Can it be downgraded to use WinPwn to unlock and jailbreak it ?

Yes if you have bootloader 5.08. Run the tool and it will tell you what bootloader you have. Why do you want this if you are unlocked with a turbo sim?

TurboSIMS can be very unreliable for some people. YellowSn0w works a lot better.

You are, of course, right. Before this tool came out it wasn't easy to find your BL so the serial number was a good guide.
I was just interested as to why some people with a later serial number had an older BL.

It looks like refurbished phones are given a new s/n - I wonder if this could identify refurbed phones? But I digress, sorry, don't mean to hijack a thread!

I know it seems superfluous to ask people to both tell us their manufacturing week *and* to run the program to see what bootloader version they have, but this thread is a great opportunity for us to collect some statistics regarding that. There are related issues that this data could help us on.

Also, regarding refurbished units: are those coming back with the second digit of serial being "K"? Unless the moderators think it'll clutter things up too much, could those with refurbished units for which this downgrade worked please report the full first 5 digits of your serial?

The Dev team had been using the BL hole in 5.8 which is used by this exploit. There are never 'facts' to support things, just speculation. If you follow the Dev Team at all you will have seen MuscleNerd's twitter on 16th April
@baldarmo the entire purpose of BL5.9 was to fix hole in 5.8 that we were using..it was literally 4 or 5 bytes...so prob no new holes in 5.9

IMHO Apple saw this hole on their own. It's possible (though we have no way of knowing) that they looked for it once we started reporting our baseband downgrades on the blog. But back in the fall, we were doing that via other holes, not through this one. We didn't discover and start using this one until January (the same week that we co-discovered arm7_go() hole...that was a busy week!)

What's remarkable about the 5.8->5.9 fix though is it really is just a 4 or 5 byte difference. Those bytes are very important!

    Edit;
Also, I think people should consider this 5.8BL hole as fleeting as the arm7_go() one. It was found and fixed very early, and they've moved on well past 5.8BL by now. They're already at 6.4BL. So those holding out for a 5.9BL or 6.2BL equivalent hole...that serves those with iPhones today but not those buying one tomorrow. So really the unlock that benefits the most people lies in finding holes in the bootrom or baseband.

But if you find yourself with a 5.8BL iPhone and you don't need yellowsn0w, consider trading it with a friend who does need yellowsn0w

    Thanks for the clarification MN.

The serial number thing is interesting but, as usual, you are way ahead of me

Not right now. Two possible (but by no means guaranteed, and please don't read too much into the following) things that can fix your situation:

If there's a version of yellowsn0w that works for basebands past 02.28, then that would come out once Apple officially releases 3.0. Doing so before the official release is yellowsn0w-suicide (they'd fix it before most people could use it).

If there's a bootrom exploit that works for iPhone 3G, that would be best to come out once Apple officially releases the iPhone2,1. Doing so before then would be bootrom-suicide (they could possibly fix it before most iPhone2,1 owners could use it).

    No!
It is far better NOT to upgrade your BB in the first place. Use a custom ipsw with BB 2.28.00 if you must upgrade to 2.21 but I am just sticking with 2.20
The BB Downgrader only works if you have BL5.8 which is only on iPhones originally manufactured up to some time in week 29 of 2008. The vast majority of 3G iPhones have BL 5.9 or greater so can not use this method.
If you do have BL 5.8 then you *could* upgrade then downgrade but why would you want too?

    Thumbs up Refurb
I had to go to the apple store to get my phone swapped out, and they came out with a little white box the phone was in so I am thinking its a refurb.. But the first 5 of my serial number is 5K914 and I never upgraded after SDK 3.0 beta 3 and I downgraded my baseband with no problems.. Just thought u should know

Thanks - it looks like the second digit being K (and the first being 5?) means it's a refurb.
Can anyone else who has successfully downgraded their BB confirm confirm that the 3rd digit of the s/n is 8 AND the 4th and 5th digits are less than 30
OR the second digit is K (in which case could you please post the first 5 digits of the s/n)
    Thanks

MN- I agree and think that would be helpful to the community. Everyone, pleased do post the full first 5 digits of your serial if you have a refurb that was downgraded.
