Push Available for Testing - All Devs

Apple today sent out an email to all registered iPhone devs letting them know the Push Notification service is live for testing now. Up until now, only a few select developers had access to push - now the floodgates are open for anyone to test live.
Here comes push, people.

coool.... but few questions.
1. Didn't 3.0 enable push already?
2. Since this is testable by more people does that mean 2.2 is supporting it or do you have to test on 3.0?

I'm excited! one step closer........ summer can't come soon enough
1. That is one of the main features of 3.0 yes, but no it wasn't enabled yet for developers beta testing the release (until now)
2. The newest 3.0 beta is the only iPhone software that supports push at the moment. This cool new feature does not work on 2.2, but will be available to us all sometime this summer when 3.0 goes live and out of beta."The glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall."

wow...i used to be big in the iphone scene, and big into jailbreaking, but when i jailbroke 2.2 waaaaaay back in time, i have yet to have a single problem...that means i have yet to visit the forums in a long time.
so, anyone care to explain what this really does for applications? I know what push is, such as push email, but there is a lot of hype for push apps, and i guess i'm just missing the point completely on what all the hype is about? Anyone care to fill in a newb?

I'm sure someone will correct it if I'm wrong, but as I understand it 'Push' as implemented here allows applications to notify you of changes. As the iPhone does not have background applications at the moment if you are not in your IM programme (for example) you will not get the notification on your phone until you access the app.
With Push the app will be able to 'push' a notification to youeven if you are not in the app at that time. There are many other uses for push (such as app updates etc) which haven't been available before. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

^^^ well put!^^^
The PUSH feature saves the battery life by allowing the application to be off until its actually needed. Think of it as a minimized screen with pop-ups, its conveniently out of the way.
There's nothing to get, its built in to the new OS.Last edited by BenzoHartt; 04-10-2009 at 06:56 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I don't know if many of you realize this or not.. but the Admins and Mods on this forum are REAL PEOPLE with REAL LIVES to live. We don't spend 24 hours a freaking day trolling the internet for news to post up withing seconds of it's initial release. The fact is that MMi is among the best and most comprehensive Apple forums in the world and we try our best. For those of you who claim we are late, look yourself in the mirror because I'm sure you didn't jump to write up an ORIGINAL review for us to move to the News section of this forum.

I wouldn't worry about the mmi haters cause that guy has what, only a hand full of posts?! And second he's complaining when mmi is only a few hours late to the party. To him I say get a life and quit refreshing your browser every minute just to find something new to complain about.
On a different note I for one CANNOT wait for an official meebo app. Been using meebo.com for too long now just to get msn going on my phone.
