Apple Stores Now Selling Unsubsidized iPhone 3G, No Quantity Limit!

AT&T recently started selling contract free iPhone at their stores country-wide. Now, it seems that Apple has joined them as well! The prices for unsubsidized iPhones are $599 for 8GB model and $699 for 16GB model, the best part being no quantity limits like the AT&T store (and a better staff)!
This also means no in-store activation. Though the phone is still technically locked to AT&T, it can be unlocked (think yellowsn0w
).
This move by Apple and AT&T seems to be a great move to clear the inventories and make space for the expected new iPhone models that might be announced at the upcoming WWDC, dates for which were confirmed just yesterday.

Purchasing these phones just to turn around and sell them is a pretty steep investment. $648 after tax for an 8GB version. How much profit do you really think to make? I just searched eBay and not one new 8GB phone was selling for more than $650. Good luck.
As for this being a sign for the new iPhone to come... YAY!

I'd highly doubt any of these phones would still have 2.2 on them so you aren't using yellowsn0w.
I write Mac only tutorials for the iPhone and own every model. My iPhones run on the following SIMs/networks: AT&T, GoPhone, H2O, O2, SimpleMobile, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Activate 8GB iphone with AT&T.. $215 (after tax) with a 2 yr contract
Pay activation ($30), 1 month of service ($70), termination fee ($175)
Grand Total Cost: $490 or so. You actually SAVE $160 doing it this way.

Activation is $36, first month is actually $83+ with taxes. And they do keep record of this so when/if you choose to go with them again, they will ask a rather big deposit of you. It doesn't affect your credit though, so as long as you're 100% not going with AT&T, you should be fine.

so why would you buy a new iphone if the one you have is already jailbroken and getting video and such. It might be a little faster but not worth the money. 3.0 is going to have everything you need in it. Gonna be a great update.
