Skype Making it's Way to the iPhone as Soon as Next Week?

AT&T call charges are sky high (especially International ones) which makes VOIP a necessity for iPhone, yet Apple has yet to allow a proper one. A good one like Skype could rock the AppStore - and according to GigaOM, it's not far way!
Though Skype has been available via third party apps like Nimbuzz and Fring for quite some time, none of the apps have proved remarkable as of yet, which makes a standalone Skype app for iPhone a brilliant idea.
There are no clues about the price (free would be assumed - most major websites are offering their iPhone app for free - eBay, Amazon, Facebook, etc). And of course, all we are waiting for is some official statement from AT&T to ruin Skype's joyA tipster — a very reliable one — tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

Am waiting for Skype iPhone app for long. My experience on call quality of SkypeOut from Fring was not good.

Will it work over 3G? If so... golden

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

no it wont work over 3g. Have you tried the fring over 3g? It is extremely laggy and pretty crappy. Also im gonna say that AT&T wont allow VoIP over 3g.

seeing as how skype is so cheap I think people will just switch all together. I only paid 60 bucks for a whole YEAR of service thats calling anywhere in usa anytime and you get voicemail your own number and call forwarding! i couldnt believe how cheap it is I use it on my computer and the quality is fantastic.

nice
Seems like skype should have done this a long time ago. Fring is really crappy and is way too slow especially when loading up.

Skype does work over 3G but is usually specifically excluded from data plans (at least where they know what they are doing - I'm not sure that AT&T do!)
On T-Mobile in the UK there are 3 'unlimited' data plans
£7.50 gets 1Gb limit, 3G only (No HSDPA) and no Tethering, streaming or VOIP
£12.50 Gets 3Gb and allows tethering, streaming and HSDPA but no VOIP
£25.00 gets everything including VOIP
If you make a lot of overseas calls it can be worth it, personally I have no need for it.He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.
