BoyGenius is rarely wrong but not a lot in there apart from confirming that there will be a new iPhone and it will be released in June (in time for the 2nd anniversary of the first iPhone).

They should think of something more original!
    What should they call it?

It would be the 3rd Gen. The G in the 3G relates to the band used for high speed data transmissions, but it is actually the 2nd Gen phone.

I think they should call it the iPhone iThree.

The G in 3G stands for 'Generation'
It is the third generation of standards for mobile phones.
The first were analogue then came GSM/CDMAOne which were 2G network standards then came UMTS/CDMATwo which are the third Generation standards.

Confusingly the first iPhone used GSM and the second generation iPhone used third generation technology. It is very unlikely that the third iPhone will use fourth generation network technology.

Whatever it is called I am sure people will get confused, so I'll stick with Tarquin

Just to debunk something said earlier, a multi core processor would not drain the battery more, it would actually make the battery last longer.

So multicore+bigger battery = much longer battery life

And with the solar panel patent it could be interesting.

With regards to video calling, it can only be used over the 3g network. I find the biggest problem with the iPhone 3g is maintaining a steady 3g data connection. This is not Apples fault, this is O2's fault in the UK. Other countries may not experience this problem but i do here.

Therefore, my bigges upgrade for the iPhone 3g would be for O2 to strengthen their 3g network to the point where it was usable pretty anywhere in the country, not flaky, but a steady 3g connection throughout - then video calling could actually be used with day to day life.

Does the multi core processor use less power than a single core one then? Even if one core is running background processes?

My connection on T-Mobile is fine. When my contract expires next month I was thinking of going PAYG on O2 but yesterday I got a colleague to run Speedtest on his with full signal and he was getting 530kbs on O2 - I was getting 1400+ on T-Mobile. With what you've just said I might have to revise my decision. Is O2's 3G network really that flakey?

Yes running multiple cores if more energy efficient than running a single core.

O2's 3G network is terrible. Often, when i have full bars of 3g signal and go into safari or something, i will drop down to edge speeds (which are always reliable). I travel nationwide with work and it is the same everywhere.

I find in major cities i.e. London, manchester, the 3g signal is strong enough to flicker up and down but not disappear. Practically anywhere else in the country = flaky 3g signal.

Thanks for the reply. T-Mobile's signal is always reliable and coverage is great - looks like I might have to reconsider.

Interesting about multi-core processors, I always assumed they used more power - just goes to show you should never assume anything

It will be released in June.

Which could, of course, be winter where you are

    Default o2's 3G network is a shambles!!
I have to agree with Reeko on this issue. I have a T-Mobile contract sim which I gave to my daughter when I bought my 16GB iPhone 3G which comes with a special sim and includes free Internet browsing etc like T-Mobs web&walk. I have been up and down the country and ALL speedtest are ridiculously slow compared to T-Mobs web&walk.

I rarely get 3G speeds in excess of 350kbps compared with T-Mobs which are always in excess of 1400kbps +

Even 2G speeds with full bars of signal equate to less than 24kbps most of the time! It's bloody atricious. I'll be switching back to T-Mobile.

Screw o2's 3G network! It's sheer crap and between Apple and 02 they are trying to force UK iPhone users to be on o2's lacking network.

Very dissapointed. can you blame me and others for jailbreaking, if only for the sim unlock?

    Anyway, enough ranting lol.
