The next generation iPhone isn't going to be as major of an upgrade as the 3G was. Upgraded CPU, more RAM, and a rubbery paint job on the back (if those leaked photos are anything to go by). Certainly nothing that would require a whole new OS. I think it's possible that at the end of the OS 3.0 "preview" they'll be all like "One more thing..." and then just up and announce that "Everyone can go home TODAY and update to the latest OS!"; or something like that, anyway. We'll probably get a 3.1 or 3.2 release in a few months with the new iPhone but it won't be anything major.
The reason I expect something like this to happen is that they want to draw attention away from the Palm Pre and if that's coming out in the 2nd quarter then waiting until June/July to release all these new features with the new iPhone would be a bad move. Not to mention many people who would have just waited for the next iPhone or gotten a Pre will now pick up the current 3G model, thus increasing sales (assuming of course that 3.0 adds all those missing features people have been waiting on).
Anyway, that's just my optomistic speculation on the matter. If I'm right I'll still be surprised, but then you heard it here first!

1) They support copy/paste
2) They allow me to record videos (qik.com at the very least)
3) They allow voice turn by turn driving directions
4) I don’t care too much about MMS, but they should support it!
5) Less slugish/lag
6) similar to SBsettings. I don’t want to have to dig through 4 menus just to shut on/off bluetooth
7) Flash support to play videos at least
8) Bluetooth A2DP
9) Multi Tasking (or at least the background push thing)
So again, I would be happy to stay vanilla as long as they at LEAST support copy/paste & recording video. If they dont support recording Video I'll be looking forward to jailbreak 3.0

No MMS or Video Recording in 3.0 according to some guy called Kevin, I'm more interested in the new SDK, maybe it will open the iPhones frameworks more, so at least some decent apps will come such as Office! I want Office soooo bad.

(I left themeing off my list above on purpose, but wouldnt mind seeing it added)
As you said the biggest benifit of staying non-jailbroken would be the increased perfromance, but also a reliable quick stock backup/restore ability. They are so close to having the perfect phone, but just need to add what we really want. It can all be done with software alone is the thing that kills me. Is Apple's political internal stuff really that screwed up that they wont allow our wish list to happen? I can only imagine why they wouldnt want video apps to be supported. Are they concerned of XXX adult recording abuse or what?

That's interesting, I've never used a non-JB iPhone for any extended period of time, so I didn't realize Winterboard would slow it down. Too bad Winterboard adds functionality that would be difficult to live without.

we still have no idea when so I am not getting to excited, besides most of the improvements are stuff we already have with jailbroken apps lol my guess is we'll see 3.0 in about 2 months.
