Prepare for the first iPhone update later this week!

With Touch (or iPhone), you can preview 30 seconds of a song and purchase it on the spot, provided you have Wi-Fi access; iPhone owners cannot get to the store via AT&T's Edge network.
The Wi-Fi store was flawless in tests on the Touch, which Apple says will hit retailers later this week. Wi-Fi downloads, which will require a software update for iPhone owners, will also be available by then."

i was just prompted to download a new version of itunes today. Im currently on 7.4.1.2 of iTunes. No update for the firmware. Honestly i don't think a firmware update would be required since their just adding an app (mobileTunes) and (possibly) updating another (ipod), but i could be wrong. I'm a web developer, not as app dev

My phone is hacked with the mac version of Installer.app and the update didn't do anything to my phone. Thats not to say i recommend updating iTunes until the pros say so, this is just my case. I'm on ATT so i don't have it unlocked.

I would assume this update would be 1.1, not 1.0.3, as .1 indicates a function add, and .0.3 indicates a bugfix. Also, the iPod Touch runs on 1.1, as laid out in the user's manual.

I think this is crap we cannot access the store through Edge. If we spent the extra money on this phone, we should at least have something over the ipod and ipod touch user.

I'd rather have this reserved for wifi. iTunes over edge would just slow down the network. It will however be interesting to see what happens with the 3g models

I find it odd that apple has any right to disable our 3rd party apps. Here is my example... When you buy a car its yours. You are free to put in a new radio, paint it a new color, put on new rims or tires. How I see it is I OWN this phone in reality its none of apples business what I do with it or what I put on it. And erasing my 3rd party apps is borderline invasion of privacy. Yes? No? Am I way off here? By the way I've been lurking for a while. Hi everyone.

I think the important thing to remember here is not that apple is going out of their way to break 3rd party apps, more that planned changes to the iPhone software will probably break them. If Apple needs to make changes to the device to keep up with new features and stay on their development roadmap they have every right to. I'd that results in breaking our unsupported mods it's not against our "ownership rights".

If you reprogrammed the chip in your car to get better performance and the dealer overwrite those changes when you took the car in for a service or recall try didn't do anything wrong did they?

I think we will all just have to decide Which is more important to us when the upadte comes that breaks our apps; the new functionality or the preservation of the apps at the expense of new functionality. As someone said before, it's not that much different than the PSP situation with Sony vs. Homebrew crew.
