go to settings, maps, download maps and choose your area. make sure your in a wifi area then it wont take a month to download... there should be no problem after that. else it sould be because your 3g is poor signal.

Do you have to download the maps or will it automatically download them as you drive?

once you update to the newest release, you must download the program to download maps. once downloaded, send to phone, reboot ( i did ) and start using it. once you download the newest version, it deletes the maps due to incompatibility. there are a few hours involved in downloading a decent map to use. so start it in the morning or at night when your not moving your laptop or leaving internet connection.
good luck!!

Just downloaded it and got a map of Ft. Lauderdale to try out. Ill jump in the car and see what it does.
Does the voice kick in only when you are moving?

Been working great for me. After you have already driven down a road and it has downloaded the grid tile it doesn't have to download it again next time.

The volume of the xGPS voice commands may very well end the xGPS experiment for me. It's not a software issue, but a hardware limitation. The iPhone simply isn't loud enough for an app such as xGPS. Even with the radio off or muted, I can barely hear the voice commands. I could plug it into my radio's AUX jack, but that would mean that I would be limited to hearing the voice commands only, not the talk radio that I usually listen to.
If someone wants voice turn-by-turn GPS, they're probably better off buying a separate TomTom or a Garmin unit.
