Carl Zeiss (the guys who make pretty much every lens in a Sony digicam, or say, the Hubble's successor) announced their ZEISS Cinemizer Plus at Macworld this week. Its a successor to their Cinemizer, which has been out a while and doing alright. You've seen these type of things in SkyMall - they're the shades you plug into your iPod/DVD Player/iPhone and then watch movies in peace (now what movies were you trying to watch that you didn't want the guy next to you seeing?).

It won't be out til March, but we had a chance to play with it at Macworld - oh, and it supports the iPhone 100%. None of this "this accessory isn't made to work with iPhone" crap. It works with iPod, and works with both the original and the 3G iPhone.

A nifty feature - this one lets you over-ride the built in earbuds, and push them back to use whichever pair of headphones you'd prefer. Controls are done from the on-battery unit, which hooks up to the back of your iPhone and clicks into place.



The Cinemizer combines high-resolution LCD screens with individual focus adjustment - meaning you can adjust the clarity of each eye individually. The resulting image is optically tuned to appear as virtual 45-inch (diagonal) screen, as viewed from six feet away (2 meters).

The Zeiss guys also showed us another unique feature of the Cinemizer family - 3D video. While you're a little limited on actual selection (A Bug's Life, anyone?), the Cinemizer Plus (and its little brother the Cinemizer) supports full 3D video playback, since it actually is showing each eye a separate screen. We checked out a sample video of a roller coaster ride, and felt just like we were at Busch Gardens. In one of those shows where they give you 3D glasses, that is. Unless you plan on buying every 3D DVD you can find, ripping it to your comp, syncing it to your iPhone, and then playing back with these - you'll prob never use that. Although they do say they're "actively lobbying Hollywood studios to offer consumer versions of the 3D movies they are creating."

The Cinemizer plus will be available in the USA, UK and Germany from March 2009. The original Cinemizer is still available, and for the first time for sale in the USA and UK.

The original Cinemizer is $449 in the US, £299 inc VAT in the UK, and €369 including VAT in Germany.

I used to had something like this awhile back, when it first came out for other devices. It was great at first for a month or so, got bored of it and sold it to a friend. Might pick up this one when it comes out. Can always sell it to someone if I don't like it

this is a good accessorie for every body that likes the movies on his phone and for those who rent them from the itunes in case that they dont have the time for watching them @ home and this is good for watching them on the go
