If you want to use your phone in other countries then unlocking allows you to use local SIMs - I know most Americans don't venture outside of the USA but some do.

I hope they update to a stable one soon. There's too many problems with it especially after reboot. But if you have the phone on and never shut it off it'll keep working. Everytime I rebooted my phone it was way too much work to get signal back, a lot tougher then taking out the turbo-sim, putting it in another phone, and putting it back in my phone. Wasn't worth it for me yet.

I'm sure all you folks have learned a lot by trying to get your phones to work with the software unlock. As for me, I just mated my SIM card to a hypersim card. Have done this with a US T-mobile "pay as you go" and a Starhub "pay as you go" card when I was in Singapore. The hypersim card worked find, didn't stick, didn't have to sweat over screwing up my phone, etc. Only tip was to turn off 3G before I installed the hypersim + phone sim card, then, turn off the phone, put the card in, turn the phone on and voila...it works. Turn 3G back on if you care to...but since iphone doesn't work with T mobile 3G and since Starhub pay as you go doesn't have that option....
I know we all will thank you for helping the Dev team figure this out, but if you want a fairly simple solution for now, don't upgrade your baseband and use an add on card....just my experience.

Has anyone got any problems with 9.6 or is there any details about the changes on 9.6?

Of course, you're right about the unlock process that follows the jailbreak. Sorry I wasn't clear. What I was trying to say had more to do with the PwnageTool that works only with OS X and which (as I understand it) also creates a unique version of the file iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw as part of the jailbreak process. The Pwnage file used for Windows (quickpwn22-1.exe) does not create a special restore file. So the way I interpret this is that, with Windows, you must use the standard Apple restore file. But is this good enough, after jailbreaking this way, to enable the yellowsn0w unlock to work?
That's my problem. I used the proper jailbreak pwnage file for Windows and used the standard Restore file, downloaded from ModMyi.com, but when I execute yellowsn0w through Cydia, it doesn't recognize my Vodafone SIM.
I should probably mention that I live in Italy but have a valid US AT&T account. I also have the original iPhone and the unlock worked with that phone, so the problem is only with the 3G phone.

Ignore everything i said!
Please ignore my previous post. Minutes after writing it I saw there was an updated 0.9.6 yellowsn0w. I used that and BINGO -- I have Vodafone working!!!
Thanks you!

i know... what a relief right?
i'm pretty sure the unlock has always worked... it just needed to be a little more "user friendly"

Ahaa! 0.9.6 .. maybe this time will work. Okay let's do it!
Uninstall 9.5, reboot (BossPrefs), install 9.6, reboot (BossPrefs), and.... TAA DAAA! Full active signal strength.
Okay, how about 3G? Turn on 3G then.. BAAAM! it works!
What about the phone function? No problem at all, everything works very well.
Bow to Dev Team, thank you!

Would I have to re-run yellowsnow everytime I switch from the ATT sim to the t-Mobile sim? or, would the phone remain unlock giving the opportunity to switch sims like I used to before from my contract ATT to my prepaid t-Mobile?

^Shouldnt have too.
The new update is working perfect for me with a "tester" pay-as-you-go Tmo simcard.

I am just going to stay on 0.9.5 until we get out of the beta stage. For some reason yellowsn0w is working flawless for me on USA T-Mobile.

Like The Dev Team said Just wait and it will work. I read the directions and it did not work. I tried all of Yellowsn0w updates, and 9.6 works like a charm. THANKS DEV TEAM,another job well done.
