heres everything that i did
1)update to 2.2 via itunes
2)use quickpwn 2.2 to jailbreak and activate install cydia and installer
3)install yellowsn0w and sbsettings via Cydia (intalled 0.9.4 at the time)
4)reset network settings and reboot with sbsettings
5)waited for the phone to say "no service" (sometimes it took a while)
6)then toggled airplane mode on for a few seconds then off (started searching and came up t-mobile) only outgoing calls didnt work
7)woke up this morning only to find another update 0.9.5 WAHOO!
8)updated via Cydia
9)reset network settings and reboot with sbsettings
10)waited for "no service" then toggled airplane once more then BAM fully unlocked iPhone 3G 8GB Black on T-Mobile USA
oh yeah after your phone is working you might want to turn on my caller ID, otherwise you will come up as "unknown" , you can find it under settings/phone menu
if you cant get service at all, removing and reinstalling yellowsn0w then reset network setting and rebooting with sbsettings helps. also removing the sim card never EVER worked for me. i think its an unecessary step.Last edited by niacafis; 01-03-2009 at 11:23 AM.

UPDATE
T-Mobile US here with a newer SIMM
At first, using the initial Yellowsn0w release, I would see T-Mobile bars but couldn't make calls, after updating to the last Yellowsn0w relaese, I could no longer connect to T-Moible.
Today I followed these instructions listed here
Hack that Phone - Unlocking the 3G iPhone with QuickPwn
Note there are 2 pages, I used every single step including SSH.
Finally I rebooted my phone, turned off Airplane Mode, then back ON, the phone searched for the Network, then Boom T-Mobile was found.
Now I'm able to receive and make calls , the only thing I noticed, every time I reboot my phone, I have to do the Airplane Mode thingy.
By the way, I have 3G and data roaming enabled as well.

Guys, this is my success with the newest USA T-mobile Sim.
I was having trouble with signal dropping with outgoing calls on 0.9.4. After the upgrade I couldn't get 0.9.5 to search for signal. Below is all the info I can think of that might help.
My Sim 4 rows of numbers with 5th row vertical (no version #)
0.9.5 would show invalid sim.
Uninstalled yellowsn0w
I reset settings and used my wife's sim 5 rows of numbers 6th row vertical (version 39.01a) Installed yellowsn0w.
Worked perfect. Everything worked.
I then put my sim back in and everything worked.
I don't know if it will lock up again when I reset the phone, but for now the newest T-mobile sim is working.Last edited by center_99_99; 01-03-2009 at 12:13 PM.

I have had my disagreements with him but he has had a lot of people hit his thanks button so he must be helping out somewhere. He speaks his mind and doesn't hold punches. I agree that the initial release of yellowsn0w was bad for t-mobile users. How can anyone argue that the initial release was a success? I am happy that the new update seems to be giving everyone back an operable phone. Good day.

.95 yellowsn0w working in Minnesota! T-mobile new sim within last 3 months. after i installed the .95 update would not work. seemed worse than .94 but then i removed .95 rebooted, re-installed .95 rebooted, reset networksettings, phone auto boots, turned airplaine mode on/off 10 sec. and worked! first time yellowsn0w has worked for me.

I uninstalled the ones that quit, plus that ones that work and just started a fresh, all of them work except for phone zap, there must be an issue with it or something, but everything is working nicely
thanks for the help
thanks to the Dev's for the wonderful unlock, working perfectly for 24hrs now...
