ok everyone I think I figured out the problem. I have a new sim card and when I go to send calls it does not work drops bars. Plus the airplane mode thing never worked once with the new sim. I inserted my mothers old sim rebooted in boss did the airplane trick and it worked perfect was able to make calls. I think if you have a new sim your out of luck. My conclusion so far

what steps did you do?

I downloaded the restore firmware from the modmyi firmware wiki page. After restore (hold shift in iTunes), then quickpwn 2.2 after load wifi, downloaded yellowsn0w. Reboot... 2 min 30 secs while having 5 dot bar on / off airplane then Searching.... BAM 5 BARS Tmobile USA. Look in this post been posting all day no issues. 10 reboots at least.

FYI, I listen(read) a lot more than I talk, hence the reason for so few posts. Could you maybe learn something from that?

Thank you!!! People stop being so negative n bitter because yours isn't working. People like myself and others who have a working unlocked 3g could be off enjoying our fully functional phones but instead some of us are checking back to try n help others!!!!

the airplane mode thing seems to work better if you let the phone fall asleep with it. the unlock and turn it off... works for me everytime i try to make a call and lose my bars but its 5 bars everytime.sorry about the spelling my 3g hasnt adjusted to me yet.....damn it feels good to say that...in my opinion just text someone and tell them to call you and stop whining

I have mine working with my mothers old sim but I still want to find a solution for everyone. does anyone know when the dev team will be addressing some of these issues since we did give up our turbo sim cards to do this. I think if we could get some advice from them atleast. I am not complaining im very grateful for everything they do all I am saying is this software has gotten a lot of hype and for them to say we are working on the issues or anything would be very helpful. Again I feel if you have an old sim your good if you have a new sim pray the dev team helps us

Well said since all work is done free it's hard to complain. I know mine is working so people will be mad but just like everyone else if mine didn't work I would be waiting or buying a 2.2 sim proxy on ebay... lol... I just think its sad people say the dev team failed. So untrue so many successful unlocks usually go unreported.... Which is sad all the labor of the dev team...

Not sure, I only enter those commands 1 time and after I turned airplane mode on and off it started coming up immediately. I was pretty happy, at first I couldn't receive calls and my 5bar dropped to 1bar, I turned on/off airplane again and it started back up. Received a call, then called out and same with text.

Try ps aux | grep yell see if yellowsn0w is running?

more information: the old sim card of t-mobile seem to work outcoming and incoming...

the new sim card of t-mobile won't work when outcoming call... only receive a call....

When it starts working for all I can tell you it holds better reception then the sim proxies. I used Gevey and had to report every time I went No Service.

I tried all the methods posted, roasted and toasted. None worked so I left it alone, and then somehow it started working by its damn self. I started reloading my Cydia items and of course a few of them made the phone reboot, so I lost the signal. I think it's safe to call yellowsn0w a failure. Anything that makes an iphone an ipod is a failure. I'm positive this will be fixed eventually, but who knows when that will be.

Go ahead and flame me for saying this, but they had a working unlock for lower basebands. MuscleNerd did a live video showing just that. And I assume they had been testing and had those unlocks working just fine. Then suddenly they get 2.28 to unlock, and they run with it? It doesnt make sense to me. This shouldnt have gone public so soon.

well it worked for me for a 2nd time just now after trying several guides.

basically as you are impatient you'd normally bypass the unlock screen after having sbsetting/bosspref reboot.
well I reset the network setting in the settings - general tab on the bottom, then it will reboot.

data roaming, 3g wifi and all was off as such.

after restarted instead of unlocking I just let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then remembered, unlocked the screen and went into settings.

in setting turned airplane mode on and waited about 15-20 seconds.

after turning airplane mode back off it searched a bit longer then usual and for the second time I got the chippie back.

i toggled airplane off and on real fast and then it magically worked....i reset the network settings before i toggled airplane on and off

Answers to some potential questions:

I have AT&T. I don't plan on selling my iPhone anytime soon, and I'm staying with AT&T. Is there any benefit for me to unlock my iPhone?
Nope. Aside from the ability to use the iPhone 3G on other networks than it comes locked to (T-mobile in the States, various carriers elsewhere), and the higher potential asking price if you sell your iPhone unlocked, there are no benefits to unlocking your iPhone.

I disagree. Unless you have no plans of traveling outside the States (what kind of person would you be?), it is convenient to unlock and use SIM cards from the country you are visiting, rather than using the AT&T international rates. Besides, nobody would call you if you were, say, in Europe and still using your american SIM card. It would be too expensive for the Europeans. So, unlocking is always good.

Um i would have to disagree with that. Dev team has spank apple to many times now. Also unlike everyone else in here i feel one day somebody will find the solution to are 3g issue for tmobile.

Well if you actually READ my post I said that they got PWNED THIS TIME!!! I didn't say anything about any of the other times. I'm curious anyone with a working tzones sim try another tmobile sim with a diffrent data plan?

The reason I ask I tried my wifes her sim is the same age 1.5 years she has the 19.99 plan. I got it going I also had my tmobile crew some over and my finding were only 2 out of 5 sims worked. The other three call failed soon as I hit call.

I'm proudly to announce that i'm the owner of a 16G 3g unlocked iphone working flawless on t-mobile. No dropped calls, workins SMS, Edge is really smooth. After 5 hours of trying all kind of methodes that i've seen here and on devteam blog, the only one that worked for me was with Bossprefs installation.
SO...
1. fresh install in itunes to 2.2 firmware and 2.28.00 baseband
2. QuickPwn the iphone (see iClarified for info)
3. Add yellowsn0w source in cydia and install it
4. Reboot the phone
5. Install Bossprefs from cydia
6. Make sure you have the sim card u want to use inside the phone
7. Acces Bossprefs from your homescreen and turn everything OFF (3G, Wi-FI , Edge is gonna stay ON but it's ok, Bluetooth)
8. REBOOT the iphone from Bossprefs, not the usual reboot!!! (very important)
9. After reboot, take the SIM card out, wait for about 2 minutes at least and the put the SIM card back inside.

I have tried 10 times, install, reboot then wait for service then uninstalled reboot.
and install yellowsnow again and again ... NOT work
I dont have a no service but it not displayed T-mobile and no bar
