How the iPhone was Hacked - Video by DevTeam
pytey, musclenerd, and planetbeing from the iphone-dev team gave a presentation at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress (25C3) in Berlin December 27th.
Heads up - its heavy in the technical details, mostly a video white paper vs anything dramatic. For any of you with any technical or developing skills though, this might be an interesting video to watch/listen to. Its nearly a full hour long, so watch while you've got some time.
This is by far the fullest presentation on the methods used to hack the iPhone.

Haven't watched yet, but I hope there isn't enough in there for Apple to work out how to stop this method of unlock in future baseband updates now that we have one.
Go dev team - you rock!

In video he explains that the exploit in the baseband will be obvious to Apple when the yellowsn0w tool is released. He goes on to say that currently the unlock is not a permanent solution like in the 1st generation but will continue the cat and mouse game. Sounds like the software unlock exploit will take a lot of time to figure out between baseband upgrades. So don't upgrade your baseband!Last edited by StealthBravo; 12-28-2008 at 08:07 PM.

I love what these guys do and I wish that I had even a tenth of what it takes to do this sort of thing. I do think these guys need to be a little bit more unobtainable to the general public though. When I go to their blog, it's seriously 90% of the people asking the same question and MuscleNerd actually answering them. I don't know how he has the patience for it. I think, and it's just my opinion, that they should simply put out a statement and let it go at that, not answer questions or clarify anything for anyone. These guys are a great resource and I fear it's just a matter of time before they get burnt out by all the dillholes attacking them at their blog.

I think their brains are working faster than their mouths at some moments. I guess thats the price for brilliance.

Agreed.
Agreed.
Agreed.
This is hilarious.
I disagree. They've done the hard part, i.e., written the code that actually unlocks the phone. With each new baseband version, all they have to do is figure out where they can insert the branch to their code.
For people who need to get unlocked and stay unlocked, this is a must.Last edited by MikePA; 12-30-2008 at 06:49 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
