3G unlock - New years eve!

Click the image to open in full size.

From: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone

For those of you that have updated through iTunes to Firmware 2.2 and have the 2.28 baseband you will not be able to use this initial release to unlock your phone. There is no way to downgrade your baseband at this time.

I'm stuck with AT&T until late 2009/early 2010 anyway and i have a launch 3g phone. Most iPhone 3G users should be in my same boat or close to it. You should have baseband 2.28 unlocked or enable it to be rolled back by then.

I'm giving this a Bah Humbug LOL!
See I think alot of the improvements in 2.2 in terms of reception and battery life were a result of the new baseband.
While I have the utmost respect for the work of the Dev team, I am hopeful they will come out with a baseband neutral solution. Otherwise we will all be hostages to this older poorer baseband while it will likely continue to be updated and improved.

i am more than certain that each baseband will be cracked by the team aswell.

the only baseband to date that they can't mess with is the latest, thats saying something by itself. xxxx

This is blessing news!

But I need to buy an iPhone 3G from apple store in San Jose. (Without a ATT contract)

Great news! Even though I have a factory unlocked iPhone 3G, this is exciting news for me. Now I can help out my friends who have carrier locked phones! Cheers to the Dev Team!
