I have a friend who says he had his 3G iPhone running on T-Mobile using a turbosim and that he was able to use their 3G network by changing the proxy settings (similar to what we have to do in order to use SwirlyMMS). I never saw the phone, only talked to him about it. I told him it wasn't possible (based on everything that I've read here and elsewhere), but he swears up and down that he was doin it. Is this possible?

Woohoo!! 3G unlock even though I got a 2G.
Good thing doing it through Cydia, stops companies like iphoneunlockuk.com selling iPhone Dev Teams software, I got scammed by them in January.
The iPhone Dev Team should put loads of copyrighted notices when they open the app in Cydia and saying its THEIR software and no one elses and they should claim a refund!
Will this be a updated bootneuter or a totally different app?

iPhone 3G has:
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
T-Mobile USA has:
"The T-Mobile 3G network may look like those in use by other global carriers, but it’s not. T-Mobile uses a radio frequency band (1700 MHz) for 3G connections that is unique in the world. The carrier claims it allows faster data speeds but the reality is it means that only phones specifically designed for the T-Mobile network will work at full speed."
So basically, in an attempt to keep their 3G network for their phones only, they shut out the rest of the world and there's no amount of tinkering you can do to change this.
So again, if you're planning on getting a 3G for T-Mobile, be aware that you will never get 3G speeds so get it for GPS and the rest of stuff.

Just left the ATT store with a new white 16gb 3G with 2.1 and 2.11.07 baseband so you CAN buy 3G with the old FW RIGHT NOW.

iMac 27" i5 quad 2.8Ghz (1TB), MacBook Pro 17" 2.6, iPhone 4s

This may be a stupid question to all of the tech pros on here.. but what does unlocking an iphone mean? does that mean that you can use the iphone on any carrier? or is theer more?

For those that did upgrade to 2.2 and have 2.28.00 baseband, do you think they do plan to work on that?

Improvements? Are you kidding me, 2.2 FW is NOT that big a deal, even the software side of it is nothing breathtaking and the baseband side of things is far from anything to get worked up over. Of course the devteam will eventually think of something for the new baseband, 2.2 FW just barely came out. WTF was the devteam gonna do sit around and wait for 2.2 to come out and then start working on a 3g Unlock
At least a 3G unlock is coming out period, better than using a POS sim adapter!
I'm sure they will eventually, one project at a time though. It's been a big enough pain in the ***** trying to get the 3G unlocked period, but now that they have a grasp on things I'm sure there will be more and more to come.
Kinda like how it was a big deal that ZiPhone downgraded your baseband to 3.9 and people were freakin out talking about the long term consequences and how everyone was gonna be stuck on the 3.9BB etc. But now look there's a fix for that too so everything will come in time.
