Walmart iPhone Coming but at Normal Price

There is nearly no doubt that the iPhone is coming our for sale at Walmart before the end of the month. Bloomberg has all but confirmed the rumor with a couple Walmart store representatives and five cell-hone department employees in Walmart stores across California.
On the other hand it is appearing more obvious that the $99 4 gb iPhone is no more than a rumor. First of all bloomberg confirmed that Walmart will be offering two models of iPhone. Those two models will most likely be the 8 gb and 16 gb versions that are currently out on the market at normal prices. Second, Macrumors has come up with an image of some iPhone advertising from Walmart (above). In the advertisement there is no mention of a $99 iphone -- all that is there is the 8 gb iPhone we alread know and love for $197 (ooo $2 off). The fact that there has been nothing to reinforce the original $99 iPhone rumor just makes it all the more likely that it is not true and wont be happening.
iPhone at Walmart in December? Yes.
$99 4 gb iPhone? No.

I think a $99 iPhone would greatly benefit the provider (AT&T) but hurt Apple's profit margins. When you think about the cost different to manufacture a 4gb or an 8gb iPhone the cost is basically the same. I mean how much could the cost difference be on a 4gig vs 8gig flash chip when you're buying them by the multi-million. By discounting the price by $100 when it's probably only costing a few bucks less to manufacture just doesn't make sense for Apple... unless AT&T would put up additional subsidy.

I am not terribly surprised that there won't be a 4GB iPhone... the cost to produce would not be 100 bucks cheaper than an 8GB by any means, and as Poseidon said... profit margins...
This move was probably taken more for people in the midwest (and areas where there isn't an ATT or Apple store is sight) than anywhere else. Here in Iowa the closest Apple store is a 50 minute drive. The store was built last year and it is the only store in the states (almost dead center of the state). The closest ATT store is about 20 minutes away as well. We do have a Best Buy which started selling iPhones a couple months back.Last edited by sziklassy; 12-08-2008 at 04:57 PM.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

While I don't believe Apple will offer a 4GB iPhone 3G it is possible Walmart in the USA may drop the price on the iPhone 3G to match their pricing on RIM's Blackberry Bold which is listed as free on select plans (minimum $79.99 voice plan) which require a minimum 24 month contract.

The also just announced on the news here in Boston that Wal Mart will be offering the $99 iphone. Their website is www.myfoxboston.com. It's in the Business section of the webpage.

Yeah...that's weird because they just said how Apple stocks jumped when they announced the release of the $99 iphone at participating Wal Mart stores. I guess the web page is different than the live news

MyFox Boston | Secret Is Out: Wal-Mart To Start Selling iPhone
No they didn't -- at least not online. Apple stock price closing at $99 has nothing to do with a 4 gb $99 iphone

It still hard to say and Wal-Mart isn't commenting, but you can check this link out -- Anatomy of a rumor - Wal-Marts $99 iPhone

if we all remember this time last year,
Apple knocked $100 off the phone!
So they will probably do it again.
8gb $99
16gb $250 or something like that.
Wouldnt suprise me one bit
