iPhone has a built in SIM!
Arrrg!Q. Does iPhone work out of the box?
A. No. iPhone must be activated before it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.
From Att's site.
Another confirmation from ATTQ. I'm an existing customer. Can I swap out my current SIM card and start right away?
A. No. iPhone must be activated before it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.Last edited by JedixJarf; 06-27-2007 at 10:32 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Pre-installed, not necessarily unremoveable...

I think it will be the same sim card, just pre-installed.

Yeah, it really just looks like the sim card is just there and removable like normal -- they just need to include a sim card, or else they can't do the easy "Buy in store and walk out, no matter whether you're already with AT&T or not" deal.
I suspect another reason they're forcing people to use their new sim card is to cut down on the "But.. but.. I have all my contacts on my sim card and they're not coming up in my phone!" people. Granted, Apple's already released that the way you get contacts on your phone is by syncing with the address book on your computer. Granted, the manual for every phone in existence explains that when you keep your contacts on your sim card, the phone can't use *any* any features or store any extra information like multiple numbers and E-mail addresses for your contacts. But clueless dolts will STILL whine that the contacts on their sim aren't working.
Good move on the part of AppleT&T, I think

Talked to ATT customer service today and the lady said the sim cards for the iPhone are going to be exactly the same as they are now.

Didn't have to talk to them. It's been posted that the sims are the same. At&t has even got a Q and A about what will happen when people use their iPHone sim card in another cell phone. This was just a rumor that went wild.
