I think they modified the OS itself not the firmware. the boot process is not part of the firmware or is the restore. there left apart from the firmware for safety reasons. So no matter what you do you always have a way to fix it. I think they may have figured out how to imbed installer.app in the OS or figured how to keep itunes from locking it down.

But its really hard to say from the videos. if they demonstrated using different firmwares then you would know for sure. I just really hope thats what they did. That would most likely put and end to the new jailbreaks every month. If they did the same for the touch it would be awesome.

Afraid not. That is the baseband bootloader. This is totally different.

what would you need to activate when the entire phone has been overtaken? activation wouldn't be needed, jailbreaking would be pre-implemented. and unlock would be standard. this is the ultimate pwned situation. and this is only the beginning of what this hack has to offer. once its official and fully exploited, our possibilities are endless.

Guy i think i totaly understand how they did this
they got the iphone already jailbroken
thus, what they did was that they had opened the .ipsw by the zip archive.
so they opened the firmware.
and played around it
and btw people who thot it was a screen hoax because they covered the bottom part of the iphone.. the reason was that they wanted to cover the everything below it that can tell that the modem firmware..
so back to the firmware.
after looking at it
they also changed the part where it says .dmg so they can manuever it into the applications they wanted .. think about it
and after more inspection they firmware has they picture of the apple (which comes out when u turn it on)
so they changed that after..
after all that they changed mostly everything in that firmware and after they put it back to .ipsw and got the iphone to have wat it has now..
its not hard .. it just takes work..

It's harder than you think. Not to mention the .dmgs and other files also must be re-encrypted.

That's a given. ZiPhone has the 1.1.4 lockdownd (probably stolen from George [The Chinese one, not Hotz]) and it could easily be put into the image, along with the fstab for the actual jailbreak.

Seems that they did a lot more to the phone than just software; as far as I know, the boot-logo('s) are not 'software' - editable because all that data is on the ROM of the phone.
Also not showing the firmware is suspicious imho; you can virtually fake anything in a vid like this..

Time will tell..

On the other hand; modding the ipsw or fooling iTunes(-server) might eventually lead to another way/possibility to jailbr & unlock a phone..

Just my 2 cents

i doubt HIGHLY that this is a hoax. My only concern is this. If the hakd fw for the iphone is being used here, how hard would for them to develop (if they haven't already lol) a hakd fw for the itouch? That's what i'm sporting right now. I can't see it being nearly as hard as messing with the iphone fw (not sure why, it just sounds harder to me).

Has there been any word from these pure geniuses on this jailbreak? like a date to expect all this fun or are we just hanging on the edge of a cliff right now?

Well, since it works on both 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders, I think it will work on the touch, not sure though. The reason it works on both bootloaders is that the bootloaders mentioned above are baseband bootloaders, and are different than the actual iPhone bootloader.

i just wanted to pop in and say my thoughts too..

towards all of you that say its a *** fake etc etc .. a big LOL! WHEN ? AND SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT YOU'RE BEING IDIOTIC! WHEN DID DEV-TEAM EVER FAKED OR PLAYED YOU? jesus! get real already!

secondly i love the work made by all of you developers, devteam, geohotz, community etc surrounding this phone.. it was a stupid phone as a stock with the smallest capabilities of most of the other phones in the market. cmon admit it.. it was a nokia 3310 with safari and wifi! BUT all of you ppl made it the best phone ever.. and I'm not an apple fan boy.. it surpassed windows mobile devices, it became the largest community ever.. hell we even got the BBC creating a site just for us! not to mention facebook, digg and other great sites to WORK for the iPhone and just for the iPhone.. anyway you got the idea..

thirdly: the future.. imo there would be FW from almost everybody creating the capability of having everything or nothing, all of them or the least of them, some of this bit of that etc for each one's tastes.. that would make the iPhone more customizable than ever.
Concerning the 2.0 firmware, itunes appstore etc.. well we'll get through that too

its been that hard to overcome AT&T locking issues, jailbreaking, activating 1.01, 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4? or would it be 3 days after the release and not 2? hehehe

once again.. BIIG BIIG BIIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT MADE THIS PHONE GREAT. its NOT apple that made it great. its all the community that has.

I'm not getting what this does!!!!!I have been adding and reading this site for months but I really don't get what this will do to the phone.....Can someone please explain what exactly is going on with the new app that i think is now out but not sure??????I understand i must b stupid or something if i dont know this but can someone explain what happens!
