Dev Team Still Working on 3g Unlock

Unfortunately not all things come easy and quick. Don't worry though they are still working on an Unlock solution for the iPhone 3g along with a jailbreak for the iPod Touch 2g.
Over the weekend they hit a bit of a snag while playing around in the 3g baseband looking for an unlock solution. The baseband stopped responding the the iPhone OS completely.
Repeated restore attempts resulted in no change and only gave the dev team lists of errors. Somehow the hacking resulted in the SPI bus on the baseband chip to stop responding. Luckily simply updating the baseband and then downgrading fixed the issue.
While they have tried to repeat the error they have not had success and are going to continue working forward for the 3g unlock. You can read more at the iphone-dev blog.
thanks Tony for the tip

is it possable that apple locked out the unlock feature by hardware. and the iphones that are being sold unlocked dont have the chip that is keeping them from being unlocked? this just seems possable because with that new error they found it could be that they unlocked it but the chip detected it and shut down the baseband... just my random string of thoughts

I personally think phones SOLD unlocked are hardware unlocked. Lots of people think otherwise but I think that would be hands down THE EASIEST way to make it so standard iTunes updates DO NOT relock the phone. There are probably unlocks out there as well (s0ft unlocks) done by Apple, I really have no comment on those. The 3G unlock will come, the question is when.
If people care enogh about this write congress. Make it illegal to lock phones in the US. Make cell phone companies compete in ways other than cell phone exclusivity.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

In Sweden where I live iphones are sold by Telia and they are all locked to Telia. But after 12 months you have the option to make it unlocked for a cost of 300SEK (50$). So I dont think that the iphone 3G is hardware locked because then it wouldnt be possible for Telia to unlock it after 12 months.
Keep up the good work Dev-Team. You guys are the greatest.

There is a class action suit against apple and at&t set for trial next month that will hopefully put an end to locked iphones in the US.
All iPhones are the same. There is a lock/unlocked token saved to the phone and sent via itunes to the phone. The baseband checks for that token to see if the phone should be unlocked or locked. The token generated is unique to each phone and is impossible to fake or reproduce.
The original iphones baseband was modded to except all tokens as unlocked and is probably what they are trying to recreate with the 3G baseband.
I think those errors had something to do with the baseband not matching the FW. But who knows. It could have been anything.Last edited by jimbeam4581; 10-07-2008 at 11:54 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I Simply love getting face first into talk about software, firmware, baseband and comparing devices.
I love this forum
